Project Thread 3.3ltr whipple into Ls400

The 1UZFE EGR Delete Kit is available for sale here.
yes it is
when we set the ems8860 up, we locked the timing a bit retarded just so we could start it an check the all was ok, before we started adjusting the setting for fuel and timing.

timing pulse is fine now, but was out due to the the incorrect wiring setup for crank and cam triggers.

Will sort out most of the little things out on monday an hope to be able to dyno it on tuesday

Today we wired up the 2x 2stage thremo fans, tps, fuel pumps, all the temp sensors directly to the ems ecu.

While tuning the car, we checked that all the injectors where working correctly, (which they are) so this is not the issue on why we cant get it too idle correctly.

At this point in time, we can only get it too run on wasted spark, not sequential firing of the cops?

We removed the rocker covers to make sure that the cams are lined up correctly (which they are) but not sure if the cams where index, will have to confirm this with the engine builder tomorrow.

The other thing the mechanic was saying, that i may need to get a set of cam gears an index it to make sure they are correct, somethink that i will need to consider after talking to the engine builder tomorrow.

Tuning the car today did came to a stop after the plastic thremo neck cracked on use, so tuning the car has stopped till we order a new 1 in, the 1 i was using was the original 1 from the car which would make it 17yrs old.

1 thing that we have noticed, the dual 044 bosch fuel pumps suck the guts out off the battery an if they dont get full voltage, they dont work effectly. We have tap into and using the original fuel pump fuse setup to run the bosch pumps, but we are going to change this an mount a fuses and relay system in the boot near the pumps for them to limit the voltage drop to them too see if this fixes the pump.

Ok
We have sorted out what the problem is with the engine.

We make a new thremosat housing out of alloy for the motor

We had to block on 1 off the throttle bodies, the idle bleed hole, as the engine was getting too much at idle which was stopping us from getting a good low idle on it and was making the engine rev high(1200 -1600).

There was also a power drop from the ems8860 that feeds the fuel injectors, so we tapped into the power feed for the cops to ensure that there was amble power to feed them.

Now when we start it, starts first go, idles at 1000 like it should (will get it down too 850-900) and revs clean to 4000rpm.

At idle, we are seeing between -2 to -3 kpa manifold pressure and when we give it a quick rev to 4k, we are getting 15psi boost and it sounds mean.

If all goes ok tomorrow, dyno time!!!!

We had a little problem yesterday.

While getting the car ready and sorting out the base map for the EMS, a section of the fuel line(factory fuel hoses from subframe to engine) split and sprayed the engine bay with fuel.

Very lucky that it didnt catch fire.

Had to crimp the fuel line till was able to place the car back on the hoist so we could replace that section of fuel line.

Lucky it happen in the workshop and not out on the open road

Update

Still need to finish off the electrical work and wire up the trans computer.

But we final got the car on the dyno today to sort out the base and load tune on it.

Car is setup with a 4500rpm soft cut, 4700 rpm hard cut till the engine is run in.

here are 2 clip of the car on the dyno.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnerwuFqBN4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqzgRSc3eM8

We didnt do a power run yet as the engine is not run in yet, nor is the computer for the trans.

So this run was a safe tune and in Overdrive, and was seeing 175kwrw 3500rpm=175km's

As soon as this is done, we will do a power run on both low and high boost.

Ok

On this friday coming, the wiring will be finished on the car.

Then on saturday, the engineer will be going over the car to do the engineers report.

Then i only have to wait 2 weeks for the report to come in so i then can final put the car back on the road, its only been 17months off the road while this build was happening.

Ok

Car was Egineered yesterday (saturday)
The engineer asked me to fix 1 thing on it, a s/c pulley shield needs to be installed on it to pass blue slip report.

So now I just have to wait 2 weeks for the report

nearly there now

Nice progress. The day it's street legal will sure be a fun one... and smoke filled one im sure! I just ran out of time on my LS because of school and ended up picking up another stock 91' ls400 for a daily. Can't wait for vids

Update

Will all the wiring is now finished on the car and the interior is back together.

Thanks to sideshow for sorting out the bugs and getting the auto to work.

We have done the 1000km service on engine, we did clearfully pulled the oil filter apart so we can see what metal is floating around inside the engine None!! this is good.

Started to do another load tune on the car till it jumpoff the dyno (Didnt have it strap in correctly)Lol, rwkw wasnt that crash hot to start with but is getting better slowly, but the torque we starting to see is alsome, started at 400nm, 530, 650, 720, now its at 856nm.

An we are only playing with the fuel map only, not the timing yet or the extra injectors.

We where get it to start doing a burn out on the dyno at 4500rpm in 3rd

will see what we can get out off it strapped down on a power run tomorrow

Drum roll, maestro........

Looking forward to seeing the results of your power run tomorrow.

Good luck!

Time for A Update

Just been sidetracked with other things

Will the car is finally on the road!!

Still has some small issues to sort out, that will be fixed very soon in time.

Car drives quite well in the dry an wet, Surprizing an good on fuel if you stay off WOT (hahahahah), but it does have a small heating issue after a couple off pulls as we are still using the std raditor in it, till the 3 core is done.

Car has a rev cut @5000 an has only done 400km on the road, but has done over 20hrs on the dyno, sorting out the setup.

This has a safe setup on it for now, but on last power run that was done, we seen 200+rwkw and 660nm just before gear changes, fuel was 13.8 to 11.8 on wot with 17psi @5000.

The chart showed a nice flat KW & NM line through each off the gears till 5000 rpm(is saved on dyno to compare with other runs later) will try to get copy to post up.

Will done another 500km, then do full service, an tighten down the heads.
After we have done another 3500-4000km, then remove rev cut to do final run to 8000rpm on dyno before upping the boost to about 30psi.

Will try an keep the updates coming as they happen with the 3 core raditor, custom W2A manifold intercooler and extra boost.

Just a quick update

The last couple of weeks have been fun, an i have just done my first 1000km's in the car.

Have seen 2 people get pulled over for speeding while trying to make me have a run, hahahahah sucker

The car has been pretty good except for
1) have had 2 fuel leaks, lucky there wasnt a fire !!
(lost 1/4 off a tank in less then 2 minutes)
2) an the gearbox is stuffed as off yesterday?
( just driving in traffic an lost all forward gears, funny that if i let it sit for a while i would have first and reverse, but no 2 or drive?)

So the car is going back to the shop, have the gearbox removed and sent back to MV Autos back in South Australia.
While waiting on the gearbox to come back, will do the 1000km service, oil, filter and torque the heads down an hoping to have my custom raditor by then.

same situation here...its nice to see how much torque these engines produce...so with 30 psi > :D.........
Was that gearbox designed to handle the torque and do you monitor the gear box oil temperature ? (read somewhere that it should be below 100 C. just like engine oil)......
