WTF is this thing????

Hi everyone,

I am sorting out the wiring before installing my 1UZ into the car and I came accross this thing (see pics). I have no idea what it is and it's not on the wiring diagram. It looks like some sort of solenoid maybe? It has 2 wires - BLACK and BLUE/YELLOW.

Anyone got any ideas?

It's the solenoid that turns the hydro fan on and off.

This is driven by a small ECU fed information from the engine ECU.

Depending how you plan on approaching engine cooling dictates what you do with it.

Let us know your plans and we'll give what advice we can.

Replace it with the 2UZ type fan idler if you intend to keep the standard belt set up. You can get these via eBay or sometimes from here but the pulley needs to be gotten from Mr T (Toyota)

Why replace it if I'm not going to use it?

if no oil in hydro fan system u will seize the pump up
just join in and out of pump and add oil to it before u finally connect laast hole
cheapest way round it

The motor seems like it's from the SC400 that uses hydraulic fan pump. You can use the LS400 fan bracket w/ pulley and it'll bolt right on.

The motor is from an LS400.

I'm fitting it into a FJ40 Landcruiser and I'll be using thermo fans so I have no use for the hydraulic fan.

I think it's the timing belt tensioner.

The timing belt tensioner is the rusty tube shaped item between the alternator and the crank pulley in the first photo.
