Guys,
Looking at doing an Electric fan conversion from the std Hydraulic job.
Going to use two 10 inch Electrical items.
Just wondering has anyone already done this ???
If so, what length serp belt did you use ???
Is their anything to look out for ???

Regards

Stephen

I am looking into this too. I have a couple of concerns...
1)How much noise will the fans make?
2)Will they vibrate?

Lex,
You say two 14" fans.
Is this side by side or with slight overlap, one on front and one on the back.
I already have these fans from my old car, they never got used and have been sitting in the shed for about 2yrs.
What i might do then is mount the two 10's on the back far apart and switched off the thermo switch.
I could buy a 12" and mount it one the front, this could be powered off accessories.
I am looking at a custom radiator 3-4 core, smaller and pushed to the front.
So 10" mighten be to bad ??

Lex,
Do you know if other variants of the engine come without hydraulic pump and a cover of some sort with ideler in it's place ?

Lex,
I can't open it for some reason ??
I have been to a few site and used the search features but got nothing, maybe i'm not asking the right questions ??
Thats more than enogh help anyway !
All i have to do i hunt around for a Celsior motor and find whats in it's place.
If it's an ideler and cover laughing, either way still laughing as it will show me what part number i need and how its done !

Thanks for your help

Coffee,

Look at the bottom of this page of the Forum.

There is an thread titled "What does the 1UZ look like without the water pump" or something similar.

Read it. It tells you all you need to know with photos.

Trying to source a Celsior or Crown Idler and mounting will be tough.

You can disable the pump by pulling it apart and removing the vanes. Block the inlet and outlet (leave some oil in it to ensure it doesn't seize) and that's it.

The hydraulic fan is very powerfull and only operates when needed if it's wired correctly.

For all the effort I don't know that the swap would be worth it.

If you are swapping use Falcon thermo fans as they should fit and they really work.

The Soarer is hydraulic and Celsior is mechanical fans. I have an article somewhere. try this www.lextreme/tech.html and look around.
The Oz and US-spec LS400s may be mechanical (clutch) setups, but the JDM Celsior definitely also runs an hydraulic fan...(My Cressida's engine came from a Celsior and has the pump etc, and I imported a Celsior last year which also had the hydraulic setup).

Guys,
1 question ?
It is easy enough to rip out the old unit ( hydrualic fan ) and bolt up two thermo switched electric items.
What did you do with the old pump that runs on the drive belt ?

See i pulled the guts out of it, blocked off both ends and packed the unit with high temp grease.
Before not long the unit had chewed out the front bush and leaked grease everywhere.
I got the unit off the other motor i have and pulled the guts out of it but connected both ends of it to the oil reservoir.
No good either same result !

I think becuase the units internals are removed the oil sit and doesn't move getting hotter and hotter causing the front bush to wear.
I thought i would try measuring the belt without the pump ?
Came to 1795mm long with the tensionor fully backed off.
So i rang a mate who partly owns a Pep's Automotive store and gave him the length to try match one off another car ?
He rang me back, i have one at 1790mm or 1820mm ?
Thats as close as i can get to the 1795mm !

Well i thought that was great 1790mm, whats 5mm.
Well 5mm is nothing, it was so tight that i had to use a screwdriver under the belt and leaver it on to the ideler pully.
After about 10 atempts and nearly loosing my finger i got it on.

Removed the pully from the hydraulic pump and all works perfect, not even the slightest slip !

I cant remeber the part number off the top of my head, i think he said it was off a Kia Mentor ?
I can find it out if you require it.

Most of us order a non hydraulic unit, and run with the viscous unit, sans viscous hub.

Also, with a belt that tight, expect the tensioner to snap.
I did it, and after about 4-5hrs of night driver, the spring snapped, and the tensioner became useless.

Peewee & Madmont,
I did consider both of your options before doing what i did.
Seeing that i had a wreck it didn't matter if i damaged a tensioner or anything else in that case cuase i had a spare.
It has been in the car like that for nearly two weeks now a perfect no noises nothing, running sweet.
As for the machining of the unit, it would have cost a little more than a $32 belt so i gave it a try first.
I also wrang every where around here for the non hydraulic unit and nonbody has every seen one, i even went to western Toyota and try to get one, couldn't find it on the parts list.
As for switching the fans on and off.
I replugged the lead that runs to the solinoid of the hydrualic pump and used it to switch the relays and it works perfect !
No thermo switch needed.

How about just disabling the sensor and ecu that activates the hydraulic pump any of you guys think of doing that, I know this post is old, but I am in the middle of this job and trying to figure out what to do with the hydraulic fan pump, loop oil lines or try and disable?
