Could 1UZ heads be modified to take VAG FSI system?

Haven't had the heads off of VAG FSI engine to see the size of the direct injection and common rail system but was wondering if it would work?

As many here are considering totally different fuelling systems, if the head can be modified then why not? There are plenty of VAG 4 pot 2.0 turbo engines made and surely it wouldn't be that hard to source 2 injection systems and bastardising to fit. As many are running stand alone ECU's this wouldn't be out of the question to make work.

Or would it... discuss?

Ok I've read up further and semi conclude the following...

I'm not sure lean burn mode (Stratified) would be achievable as the VAG head appears to have another butterfly in the inlet tract which closes the port up a bit and therefore volume through smaller area creates greater velocity and effects the cylinder head swirl into a virtual cyclone effect. The FSI system then just delivers the smallest amount of fuel straight on to the spark plug face at the very last moment through the cycle a fraction before spark. I don't think we could achieve this level of engineering.

However in performance mode (Homogeneous) the effectiveness of the direct injector is evident in bhp terms and would be an interesting exercise to see if the heads could be adapted to take the injector. It should still be very efficient and provide great performance

You need a fuel injector which is actually in the combustion chamber, much like a spark plug. That pretty much makes this impossible on our standard 1UZ heads. Besides, Toyota is already doing this with the new V6's, and I would be be shocked if they don't do it on the new V8's. May be better to just wait for the Toyota V8.

Or just increase you boost on you current motor. All this direct injection gets you is better effciency -more power without killing MPG. If you are willing to accept a slightly worse MPG, then there's no real reason to do this (other than it's cool...)
