After searching all over the site I have not found anything realting to this yet. I bought my 1996 LS400 about a year ago used on ebay. I have since put about 25000 miles on it and it has about 153K on it at the moment. So about a month ago I took it into my shadetree mechanic to have him work on repalcing a bearing on the serpentine belt. While it was in I told him to do a full tune-up (plugs, wires, timing belt, and rotors and buttons... the usual). When I got the car back it would not rev past a certain point. When I left his shop the CEL was off, but later that night it the dubious light came on. The problem started higher in the rev range approx 5500 but then move down in the rev range to about 3500 (unless it is cold - about 2500) after about a day. We pluged it up to a OBDII reader and it said that it was the cam shaft position sensor bank 1. We replaced the sensor and the problem seemed to start to go away. Slowly but surely that day it started to move higher into the rev range again. Well.... no dice. The CEL came back on and it came back to 3500 RPM. Took it into autozone and used their reader. It said that it was the same problem- "Camshaft position sensor bank 1 circuit malfunction". I don't understand what it could be. At 3500RPM it almost feels like a fuel cutout. In no way does it feel mechanical, like a misfire. While in park it will rev and growl all the way to redline like usual ( although you can feel a little hestation at 3500RPM). While driving at all points below 3500 RPM it runs like a top and pulls hard, but after 3500 while driving it just stops going any further into the rev range?????? My mechanic has a "friend" at the Lexus dealer, but all he would say is to bring it in and it would take $300 and 3 hours. Please help me to not have to take it into the dealership. Any advice????

First of all.... welcome and I think this is the best site for this kind of question. I think the best thing to go is to take it back to the original shop and have then figure it out. The problem didnt appear until they touch the car. Its possible a vacuum line not plug in or O2 sensor make be bad. Double check all the vac lines and plugs.....

i bet some wires got pinched between the distributor covers. I would check the wires that run around and through the area of the plastic cover to the distributor housing. Around the thermostat housing area and from the cam sensor of course.. Maybe when he did the belt he routed them the wrong way. Or he messed up the wiring order. I'll tell you one thing I've had problems with is bad plug wires. Don't buy the ones from Pep Boys. They arc like July fourth when they're new. Go out to you car at night and mist water from a water bottle all around the distributor cap cover area and coil. look for arcing to a ground that would signify a leaking wire or bad connection. Its very easy to pinch those wires if not routed good. That or maybe the cam pulley is damaged or ? Timing belt issues? Bank one cam gear off a tooth?

I would not suspect a belt timing problem, because that won't make the CEL come on normaly. also it would run crap all time, this seems to be rpm related.

pinched wire's are good startpoint if both OBD's say the same and there's a new sensor placed.

Took it in a few days ago to have a diagnostic run on the car. They said that the problem was that the timing belt was not installed properly. It is over at the mechanics now being fixed. Hopefully this will solve the problem. As soon as I find out I will post again. Thanks all.

AFAIK if the timing belt is out a tooth, it will throw a cam angle sensor code.

However I would have thought it would have thrown this cost straight away?

It only takes 10 mins to see if the timing belt is on properly.

seen it done many times

many people do not take care and double check when doin a timing belt

it will throw a code 13 if the belt is out one tooth

the engine will feel sluggish and use much more fuel than it should
