I'm sourcing a 1UZ engine or front cut for a conversion project. An import Crown Royal Saloon front cut would be ideal, since its ECUs are most compatible with running a manual transmission, but I think I could get away with any OBD-I 1UZ, as an engine or a front cut... front cut would be nice so I make sure I've got all the little parts I might need, but an engine/ECU/loom is probably sufficient.

My local junkyard (B&R Corvallis) quoted me about $1200 for a compression-tested 90-day-warantee engine alone... Seems like I should be able to get a better deal, though.

I'm in Oregon -- does anyone know of good places in Portland, Seattle, or possibly Sacramento or San Francisco, for getting good engines or front-cuts cheap? Looking for personal good experiences here...

Thanks much, eric

Have you used them?

Have you used them? I'm looking for personal recommendations ... I have a local yard that will sell me stuff, but it's too easy to get screwed. I want to go with someone I can trust.

also ... kind of looks like they're just a connection point for local yards, not a retailer themselves...? not sure about that.

Yup, it's just a tool that lets you search the databases of local (or wherever you choose) junkyards. I've used it a few times. I just looked up the part I needed, then contacted the yard directly.

Try eBay using search words like "SC400 engine", "GS400 engine", etc. I picked up both my 1UZ's this way and have been pleased with the results. There's a fairly big shop out in Colorado that has 1UZ's frequently and you should be able to get what you're after for $400-$500 + $100 or so shipping.John

Sorry, don't have the name, and when I checked eBay a few minutes ago, there was only (1) 1UZ listed in the US. They seem to have dried up at the moment. It's strange because just before Christmas there were 3-4 different listings for 1UZ's.

Check back on eBay every week or so, maybe there's just been a shortage of LS/GS/SC400 wrecks recently ;-)

There's no reason you couldn't swap the whole loom and ECU from a Crown onto the GS/LS 0r SC engine but keep in mind Crowns are all right hand drive so the loom exits on your drivers side.

An alternative would be to use a Crown ECU and plugs and join the the plugs to the US loom. You would need to sort out the pinouts but KDog has the Crown ones posted here and there are plenty of LS etc wiring diagrams available.
