I need help picking the righ type of engine, are there differances?

This is the engine that Im used to seeing

I have seen some discriptions of engines being sold as non-disributor models
is this what they are reffering to?

Some questions that I have are,
What are the differances between the jdm and usdm engines?
If they are differant what does it take to be calif compliant?
Where are some good locations to find these engines?
If the engine doesnt have a harness and ecu how hard are they to find? How much?
I want to use a manual trans for this, which toyota trans are the easiest to use? Im guessing that I will need an adapter of some sort.

Welcome to the forum Bob.

Most of your questions can be answered with some time spent searching.
There is a lot of detail out there.
I recommend spending a couple of hours a night over the next week or so just searching and reading and learning.

Couple of quick answers.

That TRD one was probably a show motor, never released and not available.
All the 1990-1997 ones look like that first picture.
1998-1999 had VVTi, and a different intake manifold.
The VVTi ones had CoP, or coil on plug, these have no distributors.

USDM ones will have EGR, JDM ones wont. The ecu's will also differ.

Adaptor plates/bellhousings are available, the Drivetrain section is your friend.
