now im putting this in general because Im not sure if the majority of the problem resides in the engine, transmission, or electrical.

I recently got a 1995 sc400 from a generous family member. Now im no noob to automotive repair or performance but definatly not a master. but this is not only my first lexus but first v8 and automatic.

the car has been decently cared for mechanicly and has 148K miles on it. the biggest problem I have with the car so far is the laggy-ness of acceleration when I step on the gas. now i know that this auto tranny is not particularly aimed at performance but what im getting at is... what can i do about this. tranny, ecu, or otherwise. I know i can do full exhaust and some other hp adding mods but will i still have the laggy transmission afterwards. ive read about the dragon torque converter but will that help the responsiveness of the tranny. Ive read a little about a shift kit but with mixed results. maybe one of the several ecu mods that i have read little bits about can alter shifting points.

and finally; I hate auto trannys in general. Most of the research that i have done is on auto to manual swaps. not only will this help alot (i assume) with responsiveness but but will make the car more enjoyable to drive to me. over the years of experimentation, developement and hopefully refinement of swap kits, how simple has this swap become. I do all my own work so no need to farm out to a shop for this one. what kind of fit and finish am i looking at. any thing "funky" about sc400s after swaps. not really likeing losing cruise controle, has this been resolved? anyways im gonna stop here before i fill up another page. and in advance, thanks for you help.

I've done the (in shed) shift kit mod, which cost me easy under $100 including new oil. And are happy with the results. (Search for this) It requires making or get some parts made and really just a cheap fix to a full shift kit which can be very expencive.

It all depends on what your after, going manual is $$$ and compleatley different to drive (ofcourse).

It come's down to money and really what YOU want.

A full manual swap isn't that hard.

You need an aftermarket belhousing, flywheel and clutch to suit whichever Toyota trans you opt for.

You will need to modify the tail shaft as well.

Clutch pedal and slave can come from an the manual 6 as can the centre console bits.

Fooling the ECU is easy.

It will transform the car.

over all i do want a manual and would like to do it sooner or later. but if i can get some great performance out of the auto, than i might not bother with the swap. and i really dont want to put money into the auto if im gonna swap it later. so what do you think? can i get good enough performance out of the auto on a college student budget or should i save up like $1500 for the manual swap on the same budget? are there any mods that will slightly rid the parasitic nature of this transmission or will it forever suck 30% of my hp?

thanks V8Datto i just hadnt gotten the time to search for it but thanks for the link. have you read about or experienced any negative side effects to this mod?

The only thing I can think of that is a neg is at low speeds (10-20kph) the mod that makes the oil pressure higher makes the soft changes a bit jurkey.

Not that I care, it's not that bad.
