Heater control valve

Im not sure if it is the heater control valve, but its mounted on the Passenger side of the firewall (rhd) and has 1 pipe that exits the bottom and goes to a boss through the firewall (i presume it goes to the heater) and another pipe runs from the back of the motor in to the side of the valve and then theres a cable that goes through the firewall...
Anyway this valve was leaking massive amounts of coolant so i pulled the pipes off to inspect discovering both bits were the heater hoses slip onto had both disintergrated and being this close to christmas i have no hope of getting a replacement. So i have just bypassed it so i have constant flow of water my question is what does this valve actually do because heater works both hot and cold and still turns off, and can this be detrimental to anything else

The valve just stops the hot water going to the heater core making the rest of the engine cooling system more more efficient and the a/c / cold part of the internal heater doesn't have to work so much reducing the heat inside the cabin. would pay to replace the valve. Could the fact that your heater valve was leaking be the reason your radio is playing up? Cheers

lol yes thats initially what i feared because i discovered i had no music when i got the car back on the road, but no iv discovered the problem. The mute wire from the lexus phone had become permanately grounded for some reason
