Have anyone in used an electrical alternator instead of mechanical? Instead driven by the fan belt (mechanical), is that such thing as driven by electrical?

Dave with the greatest respect ...... is it you or me with brain fade????

Why would you have an electrical driven altenator to generate electric???? Maybe on theory there is some way but you'd need a few hundred k's of battery to store it all for charge/recharge cycles.

Out of interest TVR have been free thinking on ancileries (speed 6 engine) and for example (subject to beer addled memory) the alternator being driven from the other end of the crank (fly end) with a belt running through slots in the bell. It was all about weight location/distribution and space and used 'out of the box' thinking to get round old problems.

with current tech it is impossible, when you use electricity and convert it to another form, there is always lost energy in the process. Therefore using electricity to generate electricy would result in flat batteries

Run a power steering line like the hydroboost GM cars and Diesel trucks do. Worth a try any way. You could run it just about anywhere you want with common brake line.

theres a few guys ive heard of that run em of the tail shaft mainly to clean up the engine bay.No good of course if the car isnt moving.

On race cars with limited space they put the alternator in the rear of the engine, driven by one of the camchaft.I have also seen a shaft from the front to the rear of the engine driving alternator + etc.

Dave, the most practical, is hydrauliclly driven.
May be able to use the hydraulic fan pump to run a hydraulic motor in the boot that drives the alternator.
You could even mount it under your seat if you wanted to!
Though about doing this in my boat at one stage to get keep the supercharger belt drive simple. Never went ahead with it.

Qaud,

Thanks for the advice. The other method might work. Mounting it backward. Mounting it infront of the engine and power by the pulley. If the initial electrical energy causes the electrical alternator to turn, doesnt the alternator will charge back the battery? I am not sure how many amps to power the alternator, but just like any electrical accessory. However, this accessory will regenerate power back to the battery.

lex the alternator needs to be mechanically driven, to electrically drive the alternator it would require a motor that can put out a few hp. The power used to run up the alternator would draw more than what the alternator could regenerate.

The more amps you try to pump out of an alternator, the more load is required to turn an alternator. So the more current would be drawn from an elec motor driving the unit. It would never be able to cover itself.

If electricity was able to be generated by electricity, we would not have a need for nuclear and coal generated electricity

Negative entropy is not possible. Nor is perpetual motion for the same reason.

There is some cars with electical powersteering. So you get more space.
90-98 toyota mr2 uses this i was thinking if space gets limited and the new power requires me to reinstall ps into my car i would try to use mr2 ps parts and mount the pump down next to the rack. its a very complex system tho but im not so convenced it has to be so complex
