I have just finished the archive search for coil on plug information. It sounds like a few different approaches have been tried.

(1) LS1
(2) Ford lightening
(3) 98-02 landcruiser
(4) 3uzfe

From what I understand the Ford coils require a spark plug extender and the landcruiser coils require cam cover modification for the proper fastener fitment. I havent found info on the 3uzfe or LS1 experiments yet.

So, what is the word?
 
Alternative Ignition!

Why dont you look outside the square and use a system that has been designed to be used in a custom application in the first place? Try looking at www.directignition.com there you will find the XDi which will work in ANY application

The Direct Ignition setup is the old Electromotive with a "new name".
It is still the Buice waste spark coils they have always been using and that leaves the plug
wires from the coil to the spark plugs and as far as I'm concerned you
can just use the stock distributors.

Can anyone with experience using the ls1 plug give us feedback?

The purpose of coil on plug ignition is to make the distance that high voltage signals travel as small as possible, meaning no plug wires. I think you are missing the point.
The benefits of no plug wires are numerous...

(1) eliminates spark loss from the coil to the plug (both magnitude and time)
(2) eliminates wandering spark (look under the hood of a custom ignition system at night, it is a virtual lightening show)
(3) eliminates cross talk between cables
(4) eliminates inductive currents that screw up the readings of other sensors
(5) eliminates inductive currents that screw up the spark velocity of other plugs (similar but different to 3)
(5) eliminates one more question mark in the chase of "what could be wrong with my ignition system"
(6) allows for higher rpm applications b/c the capacitive current stored in the plug wires is decreased (zero). This is not really applicable to a production engine where rod velocity is the limiting rpm factor, but it is nevertheless an issue to be aware of.

DFU, DFI, and similar systems have been around forever. Mazda used them on the miata since the early nineties, ford used them since the late 80's on the escort, etc, etc.
 
Lextreme, did you happen to check the fitment or get an idea of how well the ls1 coil on plugs swapped over?

Peewee, thanks for the pics. Looks nice. It looks like the cam cover wells were filled with polyurethane... hmmmm... maybe important for boat applications, but seems like a heavy way to go.

So if you use LS1 coil on plugs, how do you rig this to an aftermarket computer? Sorry I really want to go down this path but have only seen full kits. I have not seen anyone chop and change bits.

Any more info please?

I am guessing the ECU just sends out a trigger to each coils when it needs to fire right?

I'm guessing the jacketed exhaust keeps the water warm at start up then switches to river water to cool the engine when needed. I also know nothing about boats.

ECU's have either built in ignitors, or external ones.
In the case of built in ignitors, you have 8 outputs, one to each coilpack.
In the case of external, you have one of 2 things.
Either 1 output, going to an 8 channel ignitor, or 8 outputs going to 8 single channel ignitors.
The later is the most common.

The jacketed exhaust is to keep the pipes cool.

Because they live in the bottom of a boat there's no airflow to cool them. They overheat and crack, melt or set the boat on fire if not cooled.

The engine is cooled by a a water feed taken through the engine then the warm water is fed to the exhaust pipes to cool them. It's also an easy way of getting rid of the water from the engine.
 
Is there anyone actually running a Coil on Plug setup on a 1UZFE? If so; could you please tell me what coil you are using. I'm running a Coil Near Plug setup using LS1 coils but wish to save a little space by going to a coil on plug set up.

I've had good success with Tundra COP's up to 20psi of boost, and also have a set of Porsche Turbo Cayenne COP's to test during the next dyno session.
 
Lengthwise, they should fit if you mount them down in the valve covers. I have mine mounted with their heads exposed on a custom valve cover, so I had to fabricate some plug extensions.

Diameterwise, they're one of a few coils that fit the relatively small diameter plug wells of the 1UZ. Other Toyota COP's tend to be both fatter and shorter than these.

Another plus is that these coils have built-in ignitors, so IMO, they're easier to wire up. This could be a minus for some who prefer a CDI ignition - for those, there's always the Honda CBR motorcycle coils, and I think several here are running them with good success (Cobber & Peewee?)
