Looking for a high-profile sports car to polish its image, Toyota is finishing up development of a Supra successor, code-named project 395.

When you think of exciting Toyota sports cars, one you can't ignore is the lovely 2000 GT featured in the 1967 James Bond film, You Only Live Twice. The new front-engine, rear-drive sports car will even borrow subtle styling cues from that icon.

Our sources suggest Toyota is looking at two distinct versions for production. One will use a 3.5-liter development of the new V6 (introduced in the 2006 Lexus GS 300), making 300 horsepower. The second, higher-intensity model could use the company's 4.3-liter V8, tweaked to give about 350 hp.

Styling features a long front deck and short rear, much like the Mercedes-Benz SLK, BMW Z4 and Honda S2000 that the new Toyota will compete against. We expect it will employ a conventional folding soft top.

Pricing will likely run close to $30,000 for the V6 (to rustle 350Z feathers) and into the low-$40,000 range for the V8. The Supra spirit will rise again!

Once again, I'm gonna call BS on things like this.
Its good to dream, but until Toyota themselves do a worldwide announcement, its all speculation by some nerdy guy with photoshop.

Especially when I read things like
One will use a 3.5-liter development of the new V6 (introduced in the 2006 Lexus GS 300)
That should be GS350 if its got a 3.5L in it.

There has been a Toyota getting thrown around at Nuremburgring (spelling), and most spies rekon the engine sounds similar to a V10

2006 IS350 get's the new 3.5l V6. I would bet next year's GS gets it, too. I hope the Supra does come back with a V8 option (and it is not an ugly car).

I just pray it has boost. Although, it looks like it won't. Honestly i'd like to see a straight six twin turbo with vvt vs. a v-8 or v-10 because those will certaintly not have boost, making it very expensive to up the performance of the car, while with a 2jz or similiar it would be as simple as in the past with BPU upgrades, i.e. downpipe, exhaust, boost control. i bought an sc400 becuase i wanted a supra but the costs were too high, but i must say, the cost is too high to mod a 1uz.

Toyota has pretty much dropped straight 6 motors.

The 1G-FE is the only one still in production.
I'm pretty sure the 2JZ-FSE has been replaced by the 3GR-FSE.
If they haven't, they have soon.

wdoherty,, moding the 1uz does not have to cost a bunch.. i think i, and others on this forum, have shown that with that if you pick your parts carefully, like some used turbos, and do the work yourself, you could end up with a fun car. we know the engine can handle boost well.-as is.. i wish i could devote the effort to put together a turbo kit, but i just dont have the time just yet.. but i have been as open as i can about how i made the twin setup for the sc..there is nothing that i did, that cant be done easily-and relatively cheaply..

i never had to remove the engine, didnt open the engine up or even remove the front bumper..the only skill i have that most people dont is that i have a tig welder and like making parts.. but in the end, i think modding the 1uz is as effective as any other toyota engine, and can be done without spending crazy money.. i wish more guys would give it a shot.. dont be afraid to try,, im sure you would get help from alot of guys on the forum..

thanks much, i appreciate the support from the site as everyone is very helpful. I wasn't trying to knock the v-8 or claiming that it doesn't have potential, in my case its just a number of things that would make the sc400 hard to make it the way i'd want it. Besides the hp, the cost and difficulty of installing a manual transmission (which i feel is essential in a sport car), the weight of the vehicle, and the long wheelbase. Perhaps in non factory applications with lighter vehicles with more spacious engine bays lend to moddification that is more feasible. A turbo V-8 in the new supra would be great, but it won't happen. Say it comes with a naturally aspirated v-8, then you'd have to spend another 10 grand ontop of a new car price to equal the power of a turbo straight 6 with the boost turned up. Plus if the car came that way, you'd have the security of a factory engineered engine and turbo system meant for forced induction, with reliablity and performance from toyota that's tuff to match.

I think they blew it when they failed to produce a V12 sports/luxo car by the year 2000.
Boost is nice in that usually the cars are moderately fast to begin with, then you/I just turn things up a bit for more fun.
Still waiting for a 500+hp n/a V12, even if it come out of a new bmw that becomes wrecked in the future, providing me with a 6.0, 60 degree engine to transplant.

hmmm.. now we all know mr toyota loves to have their engines running at low stress levels which equals low hp figures..... BUT.... i'm sure the 1gz-fe can make 500hp without too much work.... but you'd be damned to find a fully equipped v12 for less than any insane amount of money....

I think Toyota have no problem making power. The goal this time around would be the sell number. Last version's sell was very bad. I think it was total 11,000 for the whole 4 years. For an average buyer, hp is not the most important feature. However, look and style is.

hmmm... anyways, that picture is suppose to be a project dubbed "son of supra"... it isn't the actual supra in production.....

apparently, snaps of a black supra-ish shaped prototype were taken last year going around the Nur. in europe... basic shape was like the current supra, but squared off at the edges and with new lights front and back.

As for sales figures, what do you expect from a car that expensive from the factory? brand new, it was more than $100k AUD from the factory (not that any were released here in Oz.. all jza80's here are imports)... Anyhow, in japan, production went on till 2002 which is a whole 4 years more than what it was in the states. Shows how popular it was.

Can't wait for the new one.... so far, everyone seems to think the safest bet is that it'll come with the 3.5 v6 n/a... let's hope it's a narrow V for the sake of easy twin turbocharging.
