Hi guys, i've been reading this forum for a few months now, so many people have done these conversions it's great to see!!!

However I've been given a tough job to do, and that's to finish off this 1UZ-FE into a 92 Hilux Surf VZN130... it's been left alone for a year and now it's my turn to finish it... But jumping in halfway through is not easy... I'll start with the what it is so far... the motor has been put in, custom engine mounts made, exhaust done, power steer done. It's been mated to the stock A343H Tranny & transfer case, which is no longer plugged into anything electronic...

Now my main problem is working out what spec the motor is... and I have 2 different ECU's for it, dunno which to use. I've been told it's out of a Soarer, oil filter is mounted front passenger side of motor. has the same plastic covers and intake pipes as Peewee's Picture in another thread (I saw a lexus 1UZ that was different again)

The ECU's I have are:
89661-30430 - 26pin 16pin 22pin & 8 pin plug separate out the side
89661-50102 - 26pin 16pin 22pin & upside down 26pin next to them

The loom I have doesn't quite match either of them though, which confuses me...
I have the 26p 16p 22p connectors and also different shaped plugs, 16pin, 14pin, 12 pin plugs 3 rows in grey and a 10 pin plug 2 rows in white.

I have traced many of the wires that I can get to, and it closely matches the 1990 LS400 diagram, wire colours are mostly the same, there are a handfull of different/missing wires

Nows my questions:

If its the ls400 style motor, where's my missing 26 pin plug???

If I run the 2 x 26pin type ecu without the auto what will happen?
can I at least start it and see if it goes with the 2 x 26pin ecu?

I believe the other ecu runs a separate auto ecu, has anyone successfully swapped their pins around to make it go?

Whoever has done a 4WD Hilux Surf VZN, where do I find the wires for the oil pressure, water temp guages and other dash lights that's needed?

Any help will be greatly appreciated guys, I will post up pics of my progress next week when I take my camera in...

Just did some searching for you, and apparently the 89661-50102 is from a UCF10 LS400 (90-92)

Whats the engine number?
Whats the date on the leads?

Have you been through the 'crown vs soarer' thread to try and decifer the motor?
Things like sump, oil filter, covers, headers are too easy to swap.
Fuel line positions would be a good way to tell.

Only the UZS131 Crown runs a separate ecu for the tranny.
Everything else runs a combined ecu.

Good quick way to test if the ecu is useless for you, is to test a ground.
Find out a ground that is on one of the plugs, and see if that matching pin is grounded to the body of the ecu. If its not, then there is a good chance that ecu is not for that loom.

bobwho80,
The 89661-30430 is the one that you want to use. The other plugs (16pin, 14pin, 12 pin etc) branch off earlier in the engine loom, and are for your instruments, starter connection, ignitor power etc. I used the 30430 in mine and have had no problems.

So the surf originally had the 3VZE V6 then?

The will be in the passenger side kick panel, one is yellow with a green stripe and the other was yellow with a blue stripe. I can't remember which one is which, but if you get them wrong, like I did, the water temp will move up and down as you rev it....I also used the original senders from the V6 to make sure they were compatable with the guages.

I've got wiring diagrams at home for the V6 model 4Runner so let me know if you ave any other questions with that....

Hi guys, great replies, you all have helped me out lots.
twisty_toy94 - I ended up removing the instr cluster and continuity checking the oil and water, thanks tho.
I am still puzzled with the 3 wire speed sensor and need to re-add it into the loom again, are you able to help with what pins the P, + and - go to on the white or grey 26 pin body plugs by the ecu? and where the P wire goes to as well, sounds like power feed to me, but 5v or 12v???
Also if you have the a343h Transmission wiring diagram, I wouldn't mind looking at that... the 2x6 pin plugs

I have got the wiring all sorted now for the 50102 ecu which the loom matches, if it fires into life, I will then swap pins around to suit the 30430 ecu. Just need fuel lines and oil filter sorta thing...

more motor identity for you guys, fuel inlet is in middle of l/h fuel rail with a banjo fitting onto a fuel damper, fuel return is front of r/h fuel rail. has oil level guage in sump, front mounted sump. forgot to get engine number and date of leads.

Bob,

I'd say you have an LS400 engine. This is supported by Peewwe with the ECU number.

The engine mount's would have been alloy and sweep forward, rather than stick straight out to the side. Airconditioning compressor will have an extension arm out the back of it to mount to the block.

i have an ls400 ecu here for sale if needed

it has 4 plugs

all plugs are 2 rows

3 plugs are close and the 4th plug is 2cm away

Cheers guys, the spark leads have 1995 on them, has alloy engine mounts, not sure about air con... the guy is sure it's a soarer type engine tho....

Bob,

The Soarer mounts are about 90/100mm long and stick straight out the side of the engine.

The LS mounts are about 125mm long and sweep forward and out. These use one very long bolt that passes through the mount.

The LS fuel lines enter and exit under the exhaust where the others versions enter from the rear of the engine up high.

The Soarer harness I bought off Zuffen has 40P 40P 40P for the wiring, so I doubt its a Soarer motor (I think he said it was a '94)

Sounds like UZS151 Crown to me.

Hi Guys,

I have finally taken the camera in to take a few pics. I've gotten it started and running. It is however spitting out fault codes 13 (RPM Circuit #2?) & 56 (???) and not really wanting to rev, I am still running the std computer instead of crown ecu as I dont want to swap the pins around if I dont have to.

Does anyone know what code 56 is? With the 13 - RPM circuit #2 fault code, I did notice a broken small grey 0.47uf capacitor next to coil on right side above oil filter but I have replaced it with a different 0.47uf capacitor.

Anyway guys, here are the pics, it runs a new intake setup as the old intake was broken in a few places.

did u do the cam belt

code 13 is soemthing to do with cam crank sensors

i wired one up and ran ****

the prob was when cam belt was done they put it a tooth out

so double check it

the ecu knows when cams are out due to runnin cam sensors this will bring code 13

Surprisingly, after looking at it today, I dont think it is set straight... didn't notice it till now, but hey... I only arrived halfway through the conversion...

nah haven't done cambelt sideshow, don't think it's been touched. I reset the ecu today and ran it up during diagnostic, error 56 came up as soon as I started cranking and idling, but error 13 didn't turn up until I started trying to rev it... I then opened throttle slowly to full and it had a low sovft rev limit (like when my nissan air flow meter is left unplugged) but the AFM is on and plugged in...

Any ideas guys?

dont know what code 56 is i looked at soarer codes and theres no mention of 56

code 13 is to do with the crank or cam pic ups
i doubt its the wiring as these wires are in the l;oom and never have to be touched

i had similar prob like i explained earlier

might be worth just pulling cam covers off and checking

when u rev it does it feel retarded

looks like u need to get multimeter out or oscilloscope and start measuring

when i had code 13 all sensors measured fine
just belt was out

seems like one ecu is a crown that has the 3 plugs and the 8 pin external plug that also has an ecu for the auto

the other ecu is for the lexus ls400

3 plugs goto the engine loom

the 4th plug is the one that goes to the dash and also to abit of the auto

so u have to find a spare plug to fit it to that 4th plug and wire it up

i have been thru this stuff with an ls400 when it when the wiring was givin to me it pieces

why do u want to swap pins around to suit the other ecu

the other ecu i think is for a crown

dont waste yr time might cause more headaches

i always tell my customers to get a matching set

saves on headaches down the track

now u have it goin u just have to learn how the sensors work and fix the error codes

get rid of the codes before u start lookin elsewhere
sounds like yr engine is in limp mode

the capacitor was prob for noise supression for the radio

Bob,

I had a simillar problem with my engine but wasn't getting error code as I didn't have engine check light connected.

Check the ECU is grounded to the chassis. I know the ECu will run a few brown earth wires but check the ECU case is earthed.

Is the ECU case meant to be earthed? I know for a fact mine isn't...and it seems to run fine, besides possibly using a little too much fuel??

no ecu case ever needs to be earth

so manufactures do have an earth on the ecu but doesnt do much only as preccusion

no toyota ecu that i know off needs to be earth

its either a faulty sensor or wiring or ecu
