Recently I got a phone call from a close friend of mine with a LS400. He did this himself and I think he does a good job too. However, he messed up a little and the car doesn't start. I adviced him check all the plugs and vac lines just to make sure everything are intact. He replied saying everything is ok.

The next thing would be check the timing marks on either crank or cam referrence points. As expected one of his cam mark were off. So to fix that you dont really have to take everything out again. Simpliest way is to loosen the timing belt tensioner and rotate the mis-align cam to the proper location. When the tenioner is loosen, the belt will allow slight belt jump and you can pretty much rotate the cam freely.

Once you get the marks align you can put back the tensioner and it should fire up.....

Good luck...

Maybe you can help me on this one.
I'm stumped. I followed a pictured step by step manual on how to replaced the timing belt, water pump, rollers and tensioners. I also replace the fan bracket since it was the problem. I might as well do the timing belt replacement while I'm in there and 82k miles since the last timing belt replacement.
After putting everything back together, I tried to start the car it won't start. It turns over but won't start. I tried 5-6 times without success. It seems like there's no igniton. Timing is correct. I triple and quardruple check the timing marks. I have sparks on #1 and #2. All the wires are connect good. Engine still won't start. What else could it be? Can a rotors installation off by 180 degrees still provide sparks? I accidentally dropped one of the distributor housing, can it cause failure of the camshaft sensor and still provides sparks? Thanks for your help.

Its possible one of distributor housing damage can cause the problem. The cam sensor (located in that housing) might be damaged and that might be your cause of engine not firing up. It is assume your timing is 100% correct. Did u check other plugs and only #1 and #2 have spark? If coil or half of the ignition is bad the engine still start but runs very bad.

I would definately double check the cam sensor and test for its ohm readings. I know what is your next question going to be.....LOL

Thanks,
I only checked #1 and 2 wires. I'll check the others tonight. I thought that if #1 and 2 have sparks, the rest should since the rotors is rotating; providing sparks. I might be wrong here. Engine won't start at all and it is flooded after so many cranks. I'll check the resistance on the sensor.

INSPECTION OF SENSORS
INSPECT SENSOR RESISTANCE

HINT: Measuring the No.2 cam position sensor, remove the right side ignition coil. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals.
No.1 cam position sensor resistance:950–1,250
No.2 cam position sensor resistance: 950–1,250
Engine speed sensor resistance: 950–1,250. If the resistance is not as specified, replace the pickup sensor.

i wired up a 1uz and customer had put one rotor out 180 degrees

car tried to start but it just wont go

took me 4 hours to figure out he had stuffed up

so if only 1 rotor is out car sounds like it wants to start but it actually wont start

I did the sensors test last night and they are within range:
No.1 cam position sensor resistance:1103
No.2 cam position sensor resistance: 1104

Engine speed sensor resistance: 1133.

PRIMARY COIL RESISTANCE LH and RH are within range:
Primary coil resistance (Cold): Jumping between 0.4–0.5. Must be my Fluke meter.

I'll will change the rotors 180 degree after I check SECONDARY COIL RESISTANCE. Wish I had taken a picture of the rotors in the housing before I take them out. I hope it is that. Thanks for your input sideshow.

There is a groove the rotor where it just slide right in. If you did it wrong (you could if you force it) then u are jacked. I would test for all 8 spark plugs for spark. If you only get 4 that mean you have having trouble with one bank.

I don't think my Bosch rotors have any groove. I'll check sparks on all 8 before adjusting the rotors.
By "Jacked" doesn't mean I've damaged anything, have I?
