recharge ac w/r12 convert?

Should I have the AC recharged with the R12 or is it better to convert the system to R133? About what $ would a shop charge to do each of these? (assuming no leaks)

Its a 1990 LS400 with 220K miles on it so I want to be frugal about money I put into it. But the AC is completly depleted. I would have this done by auto repair specialist

The original gas is R134 not (R133 or R12) !!!

sorry mean 134a. The 90-92 all were R12. THere is a service bulletin to convert the R12s over to 134a. So I was wondering whether it would be better to pay for the conversion or pay the high cost of a r12 recharge.
 
It is real easy to convert the system yourself actually. I did this last year with one of my LS400s and it was a sintch. Pick up a conversion kit at your local parts store and refill it with new.

Ive looked online and cant find anything that is a DIY conversion. Maybe becuase your supposed to collect the R12 and not vent it.
 
That could very well be possible. However I picked my conversion up at Autozone of all places and refilled it.

i used freeze-12 in my sc400, it is an r-12 substitute and has worked fine and is desinged to be able to mix with r-12 and its oil etc.

thanks. Did you buy online or at a local auto parts store? I see it on Ebay but nowhere else. Also, I think your supposed to pull a vacuum on the system first and I dont have that equipment. Did you just fill with the Freeze-12 then?
