Hi Guys,

Buoyed up by the enthusiasm shown on this site I went and bought two Lexus LS 400 V8s plus auto boxes and ECU's at the weekend finally finding three wrecked LS400 and one LS 430 VVTi in the same scrapyard after 5 months of looking. ( I was a fly's knacker away from importing two LS 400's from Japan)

I was going to buy three units but one was badly damaged and needed a new cam pulley so I declined. The VVTi scared me to death, maybe next time. One engine has done 56,000 miles ( from service book still in the car) and the other 67,000 miles so at £2,000 for both inc gearbox and everything to run them I think I got a bargain !! My single V8 Beemer lump and box cost me more than the two Lexi.!

Anyway, this coming weekend I will be taking one engine to the Cobra Kit manufacturers to get the chassis custom made to fit the Lexus engine. Unfortunately it appears that oil filter will foul a chassis rail in the kit. I have done a search on the site and have found that a remote oil filter kit is an option. Can you tell me where can I get two? Also, I remember a thread where someone used a smaller oil filter off another Toyota, can anyone refresh my memory as to the details?

There is a further problem in that both engines have what looks like an oil cooler plumbed into the water system between the filter and the "bracket" coming out of the block. Can the remote filter system simply bolt up to the existing bracket or is it fitted to the block. If its the latter I would lose my water actuated oil cooler. Any ideas?

Thats all for now.

Cheers,

Tony

Only some engines have the oil cooler. I imagine cars that were sent to hotter climates had them fitted? You probably don't need them in the UK.
Would you be interested in selling one of the oil coolers, I would like to run on on my boat engine because it has no airflow for cooling underneath the sump.
Cheers,
Andrew

To begin with the filter itself, for oil filter holders try Think Automotive

For the bit going onto the engine you either have to make it yourself or it can bought from
Castlemaine Rod Shop. I think it is about AUD$180, the best way to get in touch with the
Rod shop is to call.

About the oil cooler, if it is a type that is bolted between the oil filter holder and the oil filter it should
be possible to retain it. The question is if it is worth it since you have to modify the water lines
to get it to suit in the Cobra replica. If you decide to change it you have 2 choices either oil to air
or oil to water.
The oil to air is the easy solution, again Think Automotive can help you with all the parts needed.
The second chice is oil to water. Think Automotive also have a solution here, the Laminova cooler
( have a look at the enclosed pic ).

Another neat thing, the Laminova cooler can be had with a built in oil filter holder. this might be ideal
for you as space in the Cobra replicas is at an premium.

What kit car manufacturer are you using, Dax ?

Hi Autronic,

You have a PM btw.

I'm building my second and third AK, from AK Sportscars based in Peterborough.

The oil cooler is plumbed into the block and the top of the thermostat via some pipes that hug the engine. Its a really neat factory fitted arrangement, no problems getting it into the Cobra as long as the oil filter can be repositioned as a remote.

Thanks for the link for the Rod Shop. I'll have a clearer idea of what I need on Saturday when we trial fit the Lexus engine into an AK chassis.

Cheers,

Tony

OIl cooler info

Hi Guys,

Piccies of the oil set up .

As you can see the filter is screwed into some sort of collar with two pipes coming of it. One pipe is attached to the engine block and the secong goes up and meets with the water thermostat housing.

Really neat isnt it !! Saves me getting an oil cooler for the engine oil although I'll need one for the auto transmission.

Cheers,

Tony

Oops sorry about the size of the piccies for those of you with Dialup........

Cheers,

Tony

Quadcam,

If I take them off I'll sell you one no worries but as yet I dont know what I need to strip off the engine to get it into the Cobra chassis.

I could always ask my engine supplier to break the damaged engine and get you the cooler as that had the same arrangement.

Cheers,

Tony

Tonyd:

The oil cooler on your engine is a simmilar type as the RS Cosworth's, Escort RS Turbo and the Sierra XR4x4 was equiped with. You can also find it on the old VW Golf 1.6 diesel.

The difference between the coolers is the placement of the water in/out pipes, they are parallell on most of the cars mentioned.

That oil cooler looks very similar to what Toyota fit on the 2JZ-GTE motor, and many owners remove it in favor of an external air/oil unit. I'm not intending to start another debate over the merits of either approach, only to point out a possible cheap source for these oil coolers. I sent one of these to a friend in California a month ago for shipping costs.

I would caution anyone buying one of these things used, to know the history of the donor motor. If it met its end in a catastrophic way, I wouldn't buy the cooler, as it's liable to be contaminated. At minimum, with any used oil cooler, I'd flush and backflush that puppy thoroughly in a parts cleaner before putting it on a new engine.

Did anyone notice the crank pulley is different to a normal 1UZ?

The pulley normally has 4 spokes to support the outside where this carank seems to have a flat plate.

As my oil is always cooler than my engine coolant I think I'd be going backwards if I fitted the cooler, or in my case warmer.

Thanks for the info guys. We took the engine and gearbox to the kit manufacturer , AK, on Saturday and he liked the Lexus lump very much, in fact he is going to make a chassis jig up based on our engine as he can see other customers going down the Lexus route.

He actually decided that its easier to adapt the chassis rather than adapt the engine oil cooler system so we can keep the engine stock for ease of installation.

I was so pleased I took the Beemer Cobra out yesterday for a cold but sunny run but about 10 miles from home it started snowing............A Cobra is extremely skittish when driving on slush I can tell you !! Brown underpants time............

Cheers,

Tony
