no, i don't think you need a standalone, the stock ls1 pcm is very good and intrumentation is another thing. I'd say talking to Dakota digital and or posting intrumentation questions on the ls1tech conversion forum will help you the most. Go through the conversion section and you'll find an earlier rx-7 (late 80's) and he has video in the car and he has all the gauges working with the ls1. Maybe you could contact him and see how he pulled it off. But for now, i think that may be the trickiest part.

By far the trickest part, just removing the cluster there are about 30 connections.. Like I said one wire at a time....
