Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this topic. Now I've always been really keen on 1UZ Power. They seem to be unbeatable motor. I've never been a V8 boy.... but this engine interests me.

Now I've just bought a Second Mazda Rx7 Series 4. Thats right a second one. My good one has a 20B going into it. I'm a rotor nut. But I've just purchased this other Rx7 its got a dead engine and I thought instead of rebuilding the engine, why not just swap it with a 1UZ?!

I will be only using the car as a daily driven car. It already has A/C and Powersteering. So I'm hoping to keep those units! I'm also keen on keeping it auto (Mainly because my g/f only has auto licence and it should be cheaper to keep the auto)

What is exactly involved in doing a conversion like this? If I go pick up Box, Engine, loom for like a $1000. Is it just a case of prefab engine mounts, tailshaft and do some wiring?

I've done a conversion before, so I know it isnt that easy.... but how much would I be looking at? And what exactly do I have to look into getting??

Thanks for any help you can give me, it would be greatly appriciated. I'm in search for more power than the standard non turbo 13B.....

hey whats up im a rotor head to but since u got a 20B already gees must cost alot to bring the real power outta that engine, but anyz about the 1uz hmmm 300hp is good but im guessing ur gonna turbo that to 500hp? well im looking for the same swap info i want to put the 1uzfe to my 95 toyota 5 speed pickup, i need clutch and flywheel info cant seem to get it, good luck .............did u look into the LT1 or LS1 swap for ur 7? more power and lower hoodline i think

I'd bargain on a mimimum of $5,000 (Aussie) all up including the motor.

Essentially you have the list you only left our exhaust and an engineer. Plus a lot of hours and countless beers!

Thanks for the replies....

So there isnt anything I'd have to change with the steering? So if I can get the bitch to fit, fabricate up some mounts and wire it all up should be fine?

Yeah, I've done a lot to my 20B.... thats why this project will only be a cheapy.

Anyways, keep info coming.

Cheers

Ryan

1uzfe into series IV RX7

steering rack had to be re-mounted further to the right to give clearance, otherwise it all fits.

Thanks.... how easy is that to do?

Do you have any more info or even a write up on how its to be done....

If I spend $1000 on a 1UZ, Transmission and ECU do you think I could get it running with another $1000?? Keep in mind I'll be leaving it all as it.... no ECU change or transmission change. I can install and remove the standard engines.... and do the engine mounts by myself.

Would it be hard to adapt the A/C Over?

Don't know about standard ECU

Have used LINK ecu set up by proffesional engine tuner (Gloverman), I would say you would need to find somebody with expertise in wiring to graft 1uz harness to Mazda existing electrics. Chec pics at <www.putfile.com/hiper> Am still sorting things out; i.e. radiator & fan mounts, has remote oil filter for clearance & air con has been removed.

Very nice Hiper! Love it!

What about sump? Mounting? Was it a tight squezze?

I dont really want to get rid of the A/C.... Summer is getting too F&(king HOT!! Anyway of keeping it?

What about using standard 1UZ ECU?

Let me know more please

from my experience, you can use the following equation in working out how much a project will cost;
take the first guess of cost you have, times it by the number of years you intend to take, then by three if you have to pay people to work on your car, then by two again if you dont have workshop facilities at home, and then by two or three again for unexpected things.
you will not make a 1uz powered 1uz run for two grand, but you sound well skilled so might do it for little more than that.
good luck with it.

Yeah more info def!

I am over in the states here doing the same thing, i jsut need to figure out the wiring ECU and what tranny to use.

More info !

Over here in the US, it's cheaper and faster to use an LSx combo. That swap is scienced out and you can use both manuals and automatics with ease.

yeah i know the LSx series is very popular i just decided not to do the LSx series swap because the 1UZ engine is cheaper then the LSx. I am on a time constraint with the swap and cheaper means it can be completed faster and plus I wanted something a little different :veryhappy . I am not looking for gobs and gobs of power so even though the LSx series are torque monsters I do not need that much.

The ENGINE is cheaper, which is why I bought it. As it turns out, making it acutally run and hook up to a transmission costs considerably more than just buying an LS series with transmission. :sorry:

As for a time constraint, eth LS is a bolt in with th eGranny's kit. The Lexus is going to be a completely fabricate your own stuff from scratch situation, and even at that, making it actually run (getting the injection and ignition to work) ina non-Lexus will be time consuming and expensive. In those areas, we're still hanging out on our own with no bolt-in parts that are inexpensive. Consider $2-4k just for a stand alone computer if you didn't use a megasquirt (which hasn't been scienced out for this car yet).

Have you priced hooking it up to a transmision yet?

Well the budget for the car is $15,000 all said and done. Most of the work will be done by me and Fabrication costs will be a minimum. As for the tranny I am probably going to use a T56 mounted on a custom adapter (made by me) to the 1UZ with a 6th gear of .6 or .61 . I am banking on finding a used T56 to get that done and replacing the gears I am looking at roughly $1600 if i play my cards right.

But thats another thing i need to figure out is wheter to use a stock ECU, or use a stand alone.

20b: lemme know how things work out for you with the 1uz swap... I'm trying to figure one out for a first gen rx7 at the moment and it's looking pretty damn tight if I want to keep the engine behind the front axle.
