Gated Shifter Swap

Is it possible to swap a newer 98 - 2000 gated shifter with mine, a 1996 standard shifter? I have an sc400, and the 98 to 00 sc400s and 300s had the same interior exept the shifter was different (and steering wheel). I know it will physically fit, but will it control my transmission gears correctly? I know the 98 sc400 is 5 speed, but the 98 sc300 is 4 speed, the same # of gears as my car. It seems it should just plug in (plug and play?). Anyone familiar with the newer ones, please post.

a guy on CL did this swap a year or 2 ago and i think his parts list was in excess of like $1500.
