Its kindda funny. Most of the Lexus forums out there most of them are all talks and very few actually do things. They are full of technical knoweledge from what they read, but very few actually do. For example, I have a guy coming over to my house to help me with the installation of the piggyback computer. He is well know in the tuning community. However, when it comes to hands on. He has no idea and very nervous when cutting, splicing and soldering. However, he sounds very knowledgeable in forums and proclaim to know alot.

Its like any other forums, there are many talk and very few actually walk the walk.

You're right.

We are a community of "do-ers" (is that a word?) compared to other commnunities.

I can't think of any one thing we all do where we have borrowed the knowledge by looking a watching someone from another Site do it first.

I think Toymods is simillar to us, and I may have done them an injustice in the last sentence. If I did I appologise.

I think you have made them a compliment.
Regarding the so called experts, it is easy to hide behind a computer and claim volumes of wisdom. Google is a wonderful thing.

Its also funny that someone sit behind a computer monitor and make they self sound so tough and strong when you meet them in a gathering. They little weak thing. Like Cobra said, its easy to hide behind a computer and claim volumes of wisdom.

Wow!!!!

YAHOO!!!Man, what a Tough Crowd!!!!!!!! I just happen to agree with y'all!!!! Not restricted to just the hot rod community either.....trust me. Spent the last 40 years traveling the world in all kinds of situations and they're everywhere! Don't know how they survive to be honest with you. Most of the time, on somebody else's back, in my opinion. Anyway, let's be the doers and the rest can follow or get out of the way, eh?

As iv been getting older, iv been relizing the same thing, i used to talk too much, yes i was doing but it was going to take so long to get done it didnt matter lol. I think most of the guys on lextreme are do-ers though. I know im one now. Its unfortunate that alot of people talk and talk about FI LS, or TTSC4, but thats ok, we just need to learn to ignor them.

It's the internet at it's finest!

All the stories about the guys/gals going to meet their hot internet dates who find that the face just doesn't match the picture.
Then the technical stuff that's just mostly a waste of time.
Most of the do-ers that I know don't spend much time on the net, funny huh?
Yet we always come back for more...

Nice to have a few sites around that scrape away the bolt-on tornado intakes and get down to business.

very good thread, its true. I wont lie, when I had my turbo mr2 I took it to the shop to get a new alternater but when it came to installing a turbo upgrade I did it myself. Theres some things I just dont wanna touch, but I do know how to do it, but im not going to say yeah this is how you do it, if I wouldnt lol. But when it was time to talk about turbo upgrades I knew my shizzles. I am about 99% stupid and 1% smart. So that 1% is taking me there.... .... slowly.... hahaha

I think most people talk the talk and want to walk the walk but don't have the money, knowledge or time to do what they write or say...They get excited about it and type and then say I will it but never do it...Like turbo'ing or supercharging there motors or building a monster...In there hearts of hearts they want too but just don't have the means to get it done...I guess they should have kept there mouth shut, or turned off their keyboard..I believe I am guilty of this a few times in the past...However, my word is my word and if I say I am going to do something damn it I will do my best to try and do it....I can only speak for myself...

However, on this forum I think most walk the walk....

This thread was really an old one I dragged up from the legendary Lextreme archives... I just started searching around of late and drag up an old thread here and there that seems interesting...Hope you fellas don't mind...

This is my first ever post. I have been a member since February this year. Since I joined I have started a project. It is a Toyota truck transplant with a 1997 (pre-VVTi) 1UZ Celsior. I have found so much help on this site it is hard to write it all down. I have also been able to find so much support from members and people involved with the 1UZ. Neil Griffiths for my headers and tech support. Tom Rabold at Bulletcars for the ECU and Crown fan pulley assembly. Jeff Dellow for the clutch and bell housing.

I have had fun this year talking to the people I met at this site. The things I worked through with the help of this site were kind of small things. Modifying the front oil sump pan for clearance, putting a pair of electric fans in place of the fluid drive unit, keeping the stock R151F 5 speed transmission, installing an Autronics SM4 ECU instead of trying to make the one work that came with the cut, this and all the little things that come up. I found the Mitchell CD through the site. I have had some very nice conversations with CribbJ. Like him, I am working towards an LPG 1UZ with a supercharger. I will be starting the engine and driving it for the first time in a few weeks. I guess I am lucky, walking and talking. Thanks for having a great site. I did not even know this engine existed before I found this site. Sorry to say, before this site was known to me it was going to be a Chevy instead.

This forum is pretty unique in the way that a lot of the members that are active really know what they are doing. Not to say that they are experts but they have experience and those are the people that I listen to in particular. I am young but I have a lot of racing and auto building/restoring experience behind me, A LOT. I just keep my mouth shut and enjoy the company here at Lextreme. The people that bragg are the ones you have to watch out for! I can tell who knows their stuff. :yup:

Smitherz alot the members are infact experts, especially the Aussie boys....They really know there stuff and have taught me alot thru the years....This is an information based forum, no dought, with a just a few twists on the side....

Oh I meant to say, "Not to say that they are ALL experts...". Yes there are a lot of members on here that know far more than the average auto professional. That's for sure. I'm greatful for all the knowledge they share, no doubt!

On other lexus forums I see a lot of talk about people talking about repair costs in terms of parts AND labor. People on those other forums don't know how to wrench.

I found this thread while searching for something else.....

Very true!! alot of posers out there- this site is an invaluable tool for swappers (ME!)

Lextreme, you have a great site and some excellant knowledge accumulated here.

and everyone who has replied to any of my threads... thanks! (I know- I have a bulky FJ80 that isnt a sports car!!)
You guys will be a key part of my engine swap getting done as well as performance mods for it (like the 4.7 S/C I just made araingements to buy!!)...... which means I am here to stay MOFOS!!!!!!

I think alot of people posing about their car builds really want to mod their rides but don't have the car, money or know how to do it just yet...So they dream and post until they get out of school, get a job, or move on to another interest....

However, I do think there are always just a few liers, true posers, or just bored kids that brag about something they don't have or know they will never have looking for attention..

That's my guess anyway... I am guilty on a few posts about talking about doing certain engine builds and or swaps that I haven't done yet..

I've been lurking here since late January, and this is my first post. I've been too busy trying to walk to do any talking. I am currently attempting to fit the motor, front and rear suspension from a '92 SC400 into a '75 Corolla. I also recently picked up an Eaton m112 off ebay. I will post something in the swap section soon, as I have been taking pictures of what I've been doing so far.

This site is an incredibly valuable resource because I can learn from what you guys have DONE, not what you want to do, could do, would do, etc. I've already learned SO MUCH that I am a lot more convident in taking on this massive project than I was two months ago.

Anyway, keep walking the walk--but talk a little talk so the rest of us can learn.

Mark
