I don't know all the details as I have not done this myself, but I do know that several people are using recent GM ECU's to control the 1UZ engine. There is software available to reprogram several of the GM ECU's and they are quite well designed and able o run a wide variety of engines without much trouble. I used to have a 1987 Pontiac GrandAm Turbo with a P4 ECU and I found a programm caled "Promgramer" to modify prom chips for it. The same ECU could run anything from the 1.0L 3 banger in the sprint to the Corvette 5.7L with just different code in the PROM. The newer ECU's use flash memory and can be programed through the OBDII port under the dash.

If you plan on running the 1UZ stock with the auto trans, there is no reason not to use the stock toyota ECU and harness. If you want to run a manual trans or do other mods, then a "programmable" ECU may help out. The GM setups are not plug and play, but with the proper tools they can be made to run very well.

I am in the process of putting a 1993 1UZFE into my 1983 Celica GT-S. Since I live in California I will be running the stock Lexus ECU and trans so it will have no problems with emissions testing.

Yes as gary M has said you can use the US GM ecms to run the 1UZ. My son and I developed a "Reluctor/hal effect interface box" which takes in crank and cam signals form the stock 1UZ engine and processes them so the GM ecm thinks that it is being driven from a reluctor or hal effect type distributor. You can read more about it here.

We have reprogramed fuel and spark tables to suit the std 1UZ engine for the Australian VN VP VR VS Holden ECM's which is also compatible with the early U.S Corvette ECM "Service #1227165" I think models 1986/88
