I have a 4 speed FJ40 cruiser with a 305 chev and chev adapter bellhousing and looking to reuse this bellhousing along with existing clutch, pressure plate etc and wondering if I can use the existing flywheel for a 1uzfe conversion (with modification).

Is it too dodgy to weld up the holes and put in the 1uz bolt patterns?

Why dont people resue the landcruiser flywheels and just mod them?

Thanks for any feedback here in advance.

Thanks rms, remember I already have a v8 chev putting out a fair bit on the existing flywheel at the moment - so I would think the flywheel is strong enough.

Is the problem in the welding and re-drilling, or is the concern around the flywheel strength?

In my case I would be considering using the existing chev flywheel (rather than the old cruiser one).

Thanks in advance.

The flywheel is a casting (steel or iron) and welding will weaken the metal, welding also sets up internal stress and with re drilling the flywheel will be prone to cracking and eventual failure.

Get a billet steel flywheel machined up. It will cost a dollar or two but a flywheel that has exploded is not a pretty sight. I was serious when I said they can be lethal.
