I have a 1995 LS400 and two days ago, the Check Engine Light (CEL) just came on without any reason. The car drives and behavor like normal. No idle alteration or other symptoms but only CEL.

We did a scan and Code P0420 appeared.

P0420 OBD-II Trouble Code

Technical Description: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
Basically this means that the oxygen sensor downstream (after) the catalytic converter on bank 1 is detecting that the converter is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.

Symptoms: You will likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms.

Causes: A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
Damaged exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
Retarded spark timing

Possible Solutions: The simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.

Next step is to measure the voltage at the oxygen sensor on Bank 1 (the rear sensor, or the sensor after the converter). The voltage should be low and steady (~200mV, depends on the vehicle). If the voltage varies (e.g. 100mV to 600mV) then it's time to replace the catalytic converter. In fact, it would be a good idea to test each oxygen O2 sensor while you're at it.

One thing to note is that many vehicle manufacturers offer a longer warranty on emissions-related parts. So if you have a newer car but it's out of it's bumper-to-bumper warranty, there still may be warranty on this type of problem. Many manufacturers give a five year, unlimited mileage warranty on these items. It's worth checking into.

We reset the CEL with the OBDII computer so far after 3 days of driving nothing showing up yet.

Lextreme,

I don't know about Lexus, but a P0420 on a Toyota means a cat converter about 999 times out of 1000 on Toyota's.

I had one once (don't remember the vehicle) that the ECM was bad.

(newer) Camrys, Rav4s, Highlanders, 4-Runners, Tacomas (V6) are all known for having crap cats. Some have ECM updates (TSB's) available for the code, along with cat replacement.

If they come in with a CEL and the gas cap isn't loose, it's usually a 420 and/or 430.

If your cat is bad, I'd delete or go aftermarket. The cat's on my 95 SC400 are over a thousand dollars each.

KC,

You are right. However, we reset the CEL and its gone for now. My tech also said if O2 gone bad also have this symptoms too.

Lex,

Yes could be O2, but rare. When Toyota O2's fail, it's usually the heater element that goes.

I have seen a few lights reset and never come back on......mabye your lucky.

It should be 2 trip detection logic so if you drive it allot (I assume you do) it should have come back on by now if there was still a problem.

Hey KC,

Thanks for the info... so far the CEL hasnt appear for like 4 days now. I am sure it might comes back someday. Meanwhile everything seems to be ok.

I've gotten advice to buy one of those bottles of catalytic converter cleaner and run it through with a tank of gas for the P0420 fault code. Is this a waste of money?
