Hi All,

I am new to the list so hello. I am in the early stages of designing and building a race car for the Australian Sports Sedan rules here in Oz. we are allowed up to 4615cc for 4v per cyl engines. So I am thinking the 1uzfe is a perfect candidate hence I am here!
I was hoping that someone on the list might be able to tell me or point me in the right direction to the information of what internal modifications the OZ/NZ dirt sprint guys are making to the 1uz to get 500 odd hp and 11000RPM. Most of the competiton in open class sports sedans are running 6L pushrod chev engines putting out about 650hp so this is the bench mark i guess.
I would appreciate any help.

regards
Craig Simon here in Aus

Talk to Kevin at Kelfords in NZ.

He's on this Site as "the camshaftguy" or similar.

What do they allow for a pushrod V8? An LS1 would be much cheaper and it is lighter than the 1UZ. If you don't get that much of a break, then the 1UZ should make more than 550+ at 11K. I have no doubt that in unresricted race trim, the 1UZ can produce 700+hp. This will require lots of compression, 14:1+, 10K rpms, massive head work, custom cams somwhere in the 290-320 degree range. You will probably have to at least weld the combustion chambers and probably the ports as well. Running ITBs or some custom plenum work as well as some very expensive header developement.

Yes it can be done but you will have to do some major R&D.

an LS1 would be allowed in the rules and quite a few of the racers use them. Over here is Aus good low km 1uz's can be picked up cheap and correct me if I'm wrong but I belive the cost of development work is going to be similar for any race engine. To take the sting out of that side of things my build partner builds race engines for his job so we will be tackling a lot of the developmet work "in house" and surely hearing a V8 scream past at 10000+RPM will scare the oposition into thinking I have an extra 100HP ;-) (I'm joking of course)
I have done a little research the LS1 seems to be dimensionaly larger so can you advise of an actual weight saving over 1uzfe? I would have thought they are very similar as both are a sleeved alloy block construction?
sometimes the road less travelled is more rewarding

Acutually the 1uz is lighter than the ls1 I believe. I believe the ls1 is 430# dry and the 1uzfe is like 390# dry?

The race ready LS6 engine from the C5R weighed in at 369 lbs. From What i understand the Lexus weighs in at 425-479lbs. The LS1-LS6 has much more aftermarket support. Now don't get me wrong the Lexus motor turning 10K is fabulous, The LS1/6 has more cubic inches right of the gate. I would venture to say that the LS1 heads will outflow the Lexus in stock form.

I love the Lexus motor, but if I had to choose an engine to privately fund for my own racing efforts, I would start with a package that can be bought off the shelf with out developement work. You can buy LS1/6 heads that flow over 300cfm right off the shelf. There are all kinds of headers, pistons, rods, CAMS, intakes, etc. It will get you racing for the championship right from the beginning of the season.

Another possible perk to running such a current engine is the possibilty for some sponsorship help. Many manufacturers like to see their currnet offerings in the winners circle.

I don't think either chev or toyota would be too excited to sponsor a BMW running around with one of their engines in it ;-)

If your displacement limit for a 4 valve per cylinder engine is 4.6xx it may also be worth your while to think about the 4.5 litre nissan V8.

The extra displacement would be a bonus for racing and lesser 'go fast' parts availability may be less of an issue than for a streeter.

They're packed full of nice design features - as is the 1uzfe. It seems that the Japanese manufacturers knew they'd have to make a strong statement to earn some respect in the 'German engineering' dominated market they were moving into.

Good luck.

Yes I was quoted 4 times the price for a bare long block BMW V8 than I was for a complete 1uzfe. Plus there is very little race development of the BM V8 so it is heading down a lonely road plus it is about 30kg heavier than 1uz. I would have preferred to keep all BMW drive train but but there are too many disadvantages, cost not being an insignifficant element.
