how to stop this from happening??

please see my post in exhaust "opps it warped"

not a welder by trade..everything home taught,welding is good, but how to stop it warping in future welding???

Bolt down the flange to a flat chunk of steel or an old head before welding.

I personally prefer the "old head" method or bolting it to a thick plate of Aluminum. The Aluminum / old head (if aluminum) helps to draw the heat out of the flange a bit faster..
