So just recently i have been experiencing problems with the brake pedal. When it is pushed sometimes it wont allow the shifter to move from park to r.n.d.321, of course i can override the with the shift button or wait until it clicks and allows movement, but moreover this is happening over half the time. Which also means that my brake lights are not working all the time even when driving.. I can tell at night. I found it has a direct relation with the shift stopper that you can hear click in the shifter box.

Is there a way i can fix this or diagnose it. I just dont know where to start. It is very unsafe for me to have my brake lights only working sometimes when driving and annoying when i cannot shift into gear from being parked until it clicks.

its a 1996 LS4

When you put pressure on the brake pedal it activates a mechanical switch at the top of the brake pedal that lights the lights.

This same switch activates a soleniod that allows the shift lever to move from park.

This is a safety feature of most modern cars.

I would suggest you have one of three problems:

1. The fuse is making intermittent contact. Try removing the brake light fuse and clean the contacts in the fuse box. For good measure I would replace the fuse (they're real cheap).

2. The switch at the pedal is faulty and needs replacing. Again a cheap easy fix.

3. You have a fault in the wiring between the switch and the shifter mechanism. Harder to diagnose but you could just run a temporary "jumper" wire to duplicate the existing wire and see how it goes.

I would look at the problems in the order I've listed them.

Any problems come back and we'll help more.
