Hi there.

I have a 1UZ in a so called longtailboat in Bangkok.
I am hoping to do about 50 knots when all is ready.

I know little about Toyota engines, ended up with 1UZ because
they are very cheap and easily available in the 2nd hand market in Thailand.

My ECU packed up the other day. It has Toyota # 89661-50241.
All guys I talk to in various shops says thats an ECU for LS400.

The shop guys also insist that all LS400 have a hydraulically driven radiator fan.
Is that correct?

My radiator fan is belt driven. Maybe that means that the ECU is not the
original match for the engine?

On the other hand, since its mounted in a boat does it really matter
if the ECU and engine come from the same car model or not?

Most LS400 that I have seen have viscious fan hubs but I beleive it differs on which market they where from. I list that ECU for a UCF20/21 Celsior. For a jet boat as long as it is a 20 series ecu it should run. I prefer aftermarket ecu's in boats. Cheers

Thanks, would have thought that a full match is not important.

(I have no idea what kind of car the engine originates from.)

Having ridden in a diesel power longtail boat I can only wish I was there for a ride in UZ powered one.

It would certainly smell better.

Yes, smells a lot better.

When I decided that I wanted my own longtail I was determined to get a V8.
Intially I was looking for the Toyota 1VD (4500 cc diesel V8).
However, when I talk to shops, markets, car sales people, mechanic about 1VD they just stare blankly at me. Nobody has ever heard about that engine
in Bangkok or nearby provinces.

Would have been more happy with the diesel V8, more torque at lower revs,
easier to balance the longtail because the full power revs would have been lower, safety re fire etc in the somewhat extreme sun,
and the difficulty of buying good quality benzin here in Thailand,
to much benzin is of the gasohol mix variant.

Showing off my ignorance I throw in a few questions:

BATTERY
On a Lexus LS400, how many Ah does the standard battery have?

YEAR/CAR
My 1UZ has serial number 0587210,
can anything be said about year/car/model on the basis of that number?
Its a non-VVT engine with beltdriven radiator fan and front sump.

YEAR
It was said in another entry that the year can be found on the sparkplug cables.
I find all sorts of numbers on the cables but nothing that looks like 1994 or 1993 etc.
I am reasonably sure I have been looking at original cables.
What format is the year written in?
And roughly where on the cable can the year be found, near the spark plug, the other end or in the middle?

RPM gauge:
As others I have trouble fitting it.
I have learned from entries that one of the igniters offers 5 rather than 4 cables,
and that the 5th cable is the RPM signal (4-cylinder "format").
Have looked at the Toyota do it yourself URL, but can't really find the word igniter there.
Now, English not being my mother tongue I am uncertain what you refer to when
use the term igniter on this forum.
Starting with the sparkplug, the cables go into a relativel large box that feeds
the sparkplugs and also has a crossover cable to the other cylinder bank.
Further on there is one sparkplug lookalike cable that goes from this "large" box
into a smaller relatively flat box.
Is the igniter one of these 2 boxes or is to be found somewhere else?

Hi the two small boxes you are talking about are the coils. The ignitors should be bolted together and have two long flat plugs one pluging into each ignitor. If its a celsior loom the ignitors would be on the side of the Airflow meter plugs.

the ignitors should look similar to this

You don't need a particulrly large battery to start the 1UZ as it starts after a couple of turns only so even something from a 4 cylinder Toyota would do the job.

The year is shown as 1990 (or whatever year it is) in the same white print as the cable part numbers. You can read the date when the spark plug covers are off.

The cables are also numbered as to what plug they feed.

RPM gauge. Fit a guage that can be set to 4 cylinders and you get the fimpulse from the igniters. On the igniters (the ones in the photo in the post above this one) there are two flat plugs.

One plug has a small black wire in the middle of it and one is missing this wire. Use the small black wire for the RPM gauge feed.

Thanks, finally found the igniters, they were bolted back to back in a fairly dark spot.
None of the cables were pure black, they were all bi-coloured.
I picked the cable (in the 5 cable igniter) that corresponded to the empty slot
in the 4 cable igniter.
Set the gauge to 4-cyl. Worked just fine.

hmm,
uploading pics did not turn out well

anyway,

boat match weight in touring condition is about 900 kilo,
stash included

the boat is 8.9 meters long
the longtail (drive shaft) extends 175 inches behind the transom

present screw< 2 blades, 12 inch diameter 22 inch pitch

speed;

22 knots at 2000 rpm
32 knots at 3000 rpm
40 knots at 3800 rpm

gear ratio is 1:1

cheers

thanks,
I enjoy it

However, am now in the process of registering it and getting Tabiian Ruua,
have ran into a series of redtape obstacles.

I'm also interested in making the registration....but i still have a lot of things to do until my boat is complete.
Maybe you can share your experience about how to get TABIAN RUEA with me.
Next week I'll do my boating license. I had to wait for that until i have been living here for 2 years.

I got my skipper's licence without living here at all, although I have a 1 year visa.

The registration requirements are different for different types of boats.
(whether commercial or pleasure crafts)
My boat, as you can see from the pics, is a longtail boat meant for use
on canals and rivers.
Requirements;
photos of the boat
receipt for the purchase of the boat
receipt for the purchase of the engine
address confirmation from immigration
valid visa
skipper's licence
Engineer Class 2 licence (being able to do maintenance on the engine)
A surveyors document stating beam, loa, moulded depth etc
A surveyors document stating the engine installation is OK and compatible with regulations

For longtail boats with LOA less than 10 meters;
a maximum of 4 cylinders and 125 kW power
(doesn't go well with myh 1 UZ)
For boats between 10 and 18 meters;
no limitations on number of cylinders but maximum about 340 hp.

You must pop into the local marine dept office and check for
your type and size of boat.

cheers

Now I got my skipper's license.....the only question was:"can you drive a boat?"
I've just replyed:"of course!".....that was it.
I hope the limitation is only for longtail boats, because i have only 18 foot.

and I got my Engineers licence a few days ago

However, I have found out now that I have a Engineer Class 2 licence,
which allows me to hack on engines up tp (125 kW) about 170 hp.

Now, with my 1UZ I'd probably need a Engineer Class 1 licence.
Must try and find out how to obtain that.
