hey guys, just trying to get as my many opions and suggestions as to how to repower my triton. ive currently rebuilt the motor of the triton once and had the head 3-4 times since i have had it (5 years) but the bloody thing has been a lemon since day one. and it still runs like a piece of shite so ive had enough of it and wanna swap it out for something else.

i currently have a 1uz sitting in my shed doing nothing with no home so was thinking of putting in to the ute,

questions are would the standard 5 speed subject to the power? (i wont be giving it a hard time) being that its the torque that breaks gearboxes wasnt sure if the 1uz had enough torque to worry bout breaking the gearbox.
im more than capable and very willing to make gearbox adaptor like the dude with the sierra 4x4 has made, engine mounts and sump and the rest.

and what to run it. i dont have a computer of any kind only the one in the ute at the moment which im sure will be no good to me.

when i had the motor out last time i just quickly sat the 1uz in there to check for size of it, its tight but it would fit.

im also just weighing up costs of such a conversion, rather than saying my other thought was to buy a wrecked commodore ecotec v6 and put that in.

open to suggestions and construtive critisim

Jarrod,

The last line of the thread tells us you're somewhere in Australia!

Rather than muck around with the Triton box and adaptors it would be easier to run a toyota box on a dellow/CRS kit as you know it will take the power rather than hoping the Triton can handle the torque of the 1UZ.

You will definitely need a new computer.

As you have the engine I would set aside $5,000 for the conversion.

Have you considered running it as an auto ?

Not only would this make the vehicle much more pleasant to drive , but you also have the advantage of not having to get around the ECU lack of auto hassle and imagine no clutch !!
There's lots of hot rod guys that have bought front cuts and won't be using the loom or the ecu's so if you look around you should be able to get the whole lot for a very reasonable price .
As to the auto they can be picked up for almost nothing .
Keep in mind that if you run the auto you only have to alter the rear mount and have a custom drive shaft made up , it will also take the " Punch " out of the extra HP and possibly save any diff or axle hassles .
Way back [ bout 24 years ] when I fitted a 350 chev into my FJ 40 toyota I fitted a turbo 400 behind it much to the disbelief of most in the four wheel drive club , as it turns out it made it an awesome vehicle and the queue was quite long when I went to sell it .

I say go the 1UZ V8. there is a twin turbo Mitsi ute over here in new zealand and it moves along pretty good and is different. Id say give the mitsi box a try but id say the ratio's would be fairly wide. and if it doesnt work you can always go to the W5* series toyota boxes. after market computer wise if you get Link over there use them or Microtec.

P.S. I only say go the 1UZ V8 cause there is nothing beter than whipping the pants off a holden with your 1UZ

ok thanks guys, couple of major points ive left out for you.

*i want to make this conversion as cheap as possible, but yes i know that 1uz and cheap dont go well in the same sentence

* im not out to build some power house, just wanting a really reliable "daily driver"

*it is a work ute, so that is its sole purpose, and also wanting to go the v8 route so it will tow the caravan a bit better

*would like to keep mods to a minium. just a very basic conversion but by no means will i cut corners cause as i said it has to be reliable.

this is my order of priority

*reliable
*costs
*fuel ecconomy
*power( not to stressed about as the triton is about 70kw standard

i feel more than capable of doing such a conversion but feel i may just need to be pointed in the right direction is all, as many of you have done many conversions of your own.

i did actually get an auto with the motor when i bought it, but would prefer to stay manual, i have a dead manual gearbox here i can play with and fit up to my motor before i pull the old one out.

i do have a photo of the motor sitting in the engine bay whislt i had the old one rebuilding it(yes not the first time ive thought about the v8) but i dont know how to resize jpeg files, anyone help with that one??

thanks for the replys,

Cheers jarrod

You seem to have the order of priorities right.

To keep it affordable stick with the auto.

If you go manual you will need to make/have made/buy an adaptor to whatever manual you decide to use. Then you will need to do the same about a flywheel. If you can get the manual side sorted for less than $1,500 you will have done exceedingly well.

If you stay with the auto it will cost you nothing other than changing the oil in it and having the tailshaft modified, which you probably would have to do with the manual anyway.

My advice stick with the auto and direct the spare funds into a good radiator. One of the commonest problems I see with swaps is everyone tries to use the stock radiator from a small 4 in front of a small V8.

thanks zuffen,

ive been giving the manual alot of thought lover a couple of weeks and it may be this arvo job,(will let you know if it works or not) but what i was thinking is making an adapter out of say 20mm aliminium that bolts to either the motor or to the gearbox, use existing flywheel and starter. my main concern is if the starter will clear the block of the v8, which im thinking i wont be that lucky!! and then with flywheel just make an adapter for that also to bolt to the crank.

by doing all that i will be cutting out alot of mods and costs. no tail shaft mods, no speedo mods, factory postion shifter, no rear xmember changes amongst others

but i will get back on tonight and let you guys+gals if i had a win or not.

other thought is would the 4cyl starter have enough grunt to turn the v8 over??

let me know if im dreaming or not with the adapters and such....

Thanks.... Lexuswb

well ive been out and check out how the 5 speed would line up with the v8 and as what i thought might be the case it has no chance of working.

so i think ill be aborting the v8 option and go the v6 ecotec option as i need to buy a wreck to fix my car(vs senator) which will leave me the whole v6 drivetrain for the ute. i feel as though it will be a much easier and alot cheaper option.

Thanks for your help though guys,

Lexuswb
