i am startin this conversion in the coming weeks, i am getting a celsior front cut, and im going to order engine mount kit and sump from castlemain rod shop, i am looking at using the autronic SM4 ECU, other than this, what else will i need, or any troubles am i going to run into, its in a 2wd early 97 (same as 95) hilux.

any help would be great

Nathan

well i finally started the conversion, after tryin to find the right conversion kit, i finally went with SSS automotive, i have also used CRS mounts, but i think with 2 minor mods the stock rear sump will fit, if not CRS have already modded a pickup for me, and if i need the sump ill have it in no time, other things ive done is, hydraulic suspension, suicide doors, IRS, new rear chassis clip, smooth firewall, and a tacoma front, here are some pics i just took

It hasn't taken long for them to catch on. When I was researching my swap 12months ago, they basically laughed at me saying there was not enough demand for them to design engine mounts - so I did my own.

Boy how times have changed!!

Good luck!

That's going to be one tough "Little Truck" with the air suspension and suicide doors.

How will you go with QLD engineering as they can be right mongrels.

its still regoed, i never took it off the road, and it is one of the few with hydraulic suspension, not air

yer i still have my cardboard engine mounts somewhere here

but my hilux was auto and 2wd originally so not sure if they make a kit to suit that

but ive been doin conversions for 10 yrs so i did them in not time

mine was 2wd auto as well, conversion could not have been easier, I had mid sump on mine but changed it for front sump, cant see why you would be worried about fabn mounts with all the chopn you have done they would be a no brainer for you, thats one smooth lookn lux, I was gunna lower mine but remembered how useless my old lowered courier was so I went for the prerunner look, keep us all posted on ya progress

i know i probably could have made the mounts, but i wasnt real confident, never done a conversion before. how did you make a front sump fit, is all your steering drag link behind your crossmember, there was no way a front sump was fitting in mine.

nathan,
From the pics, your engine is much further back than other 'traditional' hilux conversions - a front sump 1UZ, will fit with little modification, providing you move it forward about 50 - 75mm from the standard firewall.

aahh, sweet, i just used the rear sump as i want the motor as far back as i can, less weight in front of the wheels, more behind them, i was under the impression this is the right way?

front sump fits fine and motor has 40mm clearance from firewall and gbox mounts to orig mounts, enuf room up front for thermo, mine is 98 and firewall is a bit diff like internal handbrake, drag link is just to rear of sump

i thought that might be the case, i got a internal handbrake from a v6 4runner, but yeh my drag link is in front of the sump, and i should have around the same 40mm for the firewall, and heaps of space for thermo and radiator i hope

yeah if you want your engine to sit far back the rear sump should work no problems, i had the factory rear sump motor but swaped to a front sump so i could locate my engine in a more servicable position...i still had to notch out the back of the bowl though so the steering arm could arc around.....Keep up the pics nathan thats gonna be a seriously mean looking minitruck!!! these are what my mounts look like (the bottom ones that is)...

well ive been a little slack lately, but i finally bolted up my new manual gearbox, how do i know it is done right, last thing i want to do is mess it up.

Hey, I cant see the pics of nathans Lux,and i was also wondering if anyone has any schematics of the engine mounts that they used? Im looking at putting a 1UZ into my lux and need to source all the stuff before i start.

Thanks

Jason

Jason,
from what I've learnt, each hilux conversion has subtle differences and its better to sit the 1UZ in the vehicle and measure up yourself - it also depends on how your sump configuration sits with the cross member, whether its 2wd or 4wd, and whether you've got A/C etc...
