My Motor has arrived. I asked for a soarer rear sump and when all the plastic wrapping was remove found a front sump which I was highly pissed off about. The wreaker then said that they knew nothing about the rearward sumped engines. Luckily LOWBOY needed a front sump so we have done a swap. Cheers LOWBOY. I was surprised to find my motor came with a complete uncut loom and ignitors. No Airflow meter or ECU but I will run a link or link plus anyway.
I came up with this idea at the end of last year and most of the initial planning has been done. Heres the plan
Take a 100series van - perfer 5door, fit 1uz with manual, make reliable and use to transport my motorbike around on weekends and use to collect parts during the week.
I purchased a 1990 5 door van at the end of last year with a blown 2.8 diesel. Everything was put on hold as at the beginning of the year as I leased a larger workshop and had to get everything working well. Over the year I have continued my research and am now ready to start ( must do cambelt on Wifes car first)
I was going to use an Auto but have found a box which I think will do the job so manual it is.
I figure that if Toyota can do it so can I. The toyotas were made for emergency services in Japan. I have found some at auctions. They were UZH132s and UZH138s. I found references to around 506 chassis numbers of 2wheel drive vans and around 253 4x4 vans. They were high tops with an extra high top added on and extra long. Auto of course with big red lights. If anyone has info on these I would love to know more. Toyota NZ can't get any info as the Japanise say none came here. The only thing I know that was different were the exhaust manifolds, meant to be cast iron.
I also know of a Guy in Auckland who paid a guy to fit one into his van. This is good to know but again it was auto. Meant to be a nice van and very nice to drive.
I will keep everyone informed. I hope to have it running by Christmas. For the last too Christmases I have been fitted motors to a Navara. Christmas 2003 VG30E into D21, christmas 2004 VG30DET into same navara. This year it's my van and Rob with the Navara will be helping me instead of working on his ute.

Cheers all

Peewee - you are right, we had already swapped the sumps, the rearward sump looks good against the original motor too.
svpmx83 - That was the same one I found recently aswell. In fact I found it on two sites - the other looked like a russan site. I like the extra room of a hightop and extra long and one with a 1uz in it would freak people out - maybe for my next one.
My engine stand has arrived. Had to get something bigger than what I had as they are bending with the weight of a little v6 on them. I think I will try to use the stand to fit the engine into the van. The motor is wider than the chassis rails so I can't simply drop the van over the motor. I think I will have to twist the motor once it is in the hole. I have organised an adaptor plate for a 1kz-te turbo diesel box, has the same bolt pattern as the R series boxes. Standard van has a G55 box which has the W pattern but looks smaller than the W box. The 1KZ-te box is longer and runs an electronic speedo which may cause problems.
Cheers

Sounds cool, always wondered if a 1uz would fit in a newer tarago, now that would be fat, is it gunna be lowered or lifted?

A mate of mine has one of the v8 ambulances in his workshop. if you would like me to look at something for you let me know

Some photos would be great. Also Could you check for me the oil filter position, sump position, exhaust manifolds - should be cast. Is the A/c installed and does the powersteer pump have the reservoir attached or is it remote. Where is the handbrake - between seats or under dash? Does the motor look the same as a normal car motor. Photos of most angles of the motor from top and below would be great.
Is it going to be used as an ambulance or converted to something else? These are very rare and Toyota Japan won't give out much info.

Cheers

Hey Kelvin,

My W5* gearbox is now adapted to my 1u Belhousing after a wee bit of grinding at the bellhousing with the dermal(cheers MUZZA). Geoff's adapters are really tight on the dowells and spigot so id say there is little no chance it will stuff the input bearing. So if this is the case with my adaptor i hope his 'R' series ones are as good.

Cheers,
Philip

any more pics? got a mate interested in doin a van and I got a spare 1/2 cut, would like to see how it fits the hole

Mate The motor is still a attached to the engine stand less the bits that LOWBOY stole to get his truck running. At least someone is getting some good out of my motor. I have also got a better cleaner body (van body that is) which is a 1996 shorty five door. I will continue one of these days. Cheers

you will have fun with the exhausts

i just wired a 1iz crown engine and auto into a 96 hiace

was a big job

bugger all clearance between the crown headers and the torsion bars i think

he used the oil fitlers that i get and had no clearance prbs but it is a crown 1uz

so if u dont have a crown 1uz u might possible need custom extractors
if u do make sure they remove the exhaust studs and fit bolts because once they on the extractors will be impossible to remove if u have studs

and another hting to look for

sit the engine as far back as possible because the drivers seat will hit the throittle body and intake pipe

i think u will still have to modify the seat and maybe even raise it

the crown engine fitted ok but the externals were a bigggggggggg pain in the butt

another thing is the sump will sit very low
on the one i wired the shop modified the crossmember and built a sump gaurd around it so as to protect the sump abit

anyway not sure if you will encounter these probs but these where probs on the hiace i did

it might look easy but its not

Ok im guilty for slowing this project downa bit as i "borrowed" the alternator and the thermostat housing of gloverman's 1UZ, Dont worry all will be returned asap...My ute is going i just need to steal it back off my father!!!... As far as the sump is concerned i think the rear sump 1UZ will go in ok, I also swapped my single throttle body with kalvin so that may solve the tightness there. I have a spare custom remote mount oil filter adaptor so i will donate that to the cause...Hopefully i can donate more of my time to kalvin to this project to help see it get underway.

Thanks for the tips Sideshow. I have got a spare set of crown log headers as I know the exhaust will be tight. When Toyota did them they put a cast iron manifold on the hiace. I have a great group of lextremers to borrow parts off. Cheers Kelvin

are the exhaust ports for the soarer and crown 1uz same diameter

i have seen 2 different types of exhaust manifold gaskets

2 different port sizes on the manifold
so this brings me to ask do the heads have different exhaust ports

not that it causes a prob just that u migth loose anit of power if u have a soarer 1uz and crown headers

i dont mean to sound bad but the mechanic wasnt very pleased with how it went

he also drove my hilux with a 1uz and didnt seem to pleased

which i agree with him my crown 1uz seems sluggish sometimes but i just put up with it

he has done afew and recons the best one so far was a 1uz with a 5speed manual in an lj torana

so im startin to think that the auto drains abit of power and with only 3 gears plus overdrive it needs afew more gears

anyway in the future ill get my importers to find me a complete 1uz from a later model with 8 coils etc

and fit it in my hilux

hey sideshow,

Someone called your Hilux a slug?? I took my one for its first drive this weekend. It sure wasnt a slug but im running the after market computer(not dialed in yet), headers(factory) and supra 5 speed and i thought it went well. Maybe you should just work on doing an after market computer and a 5 speed manual or soarer auto??

I agree though the LJ XU1 with a 1UZ would be a good conversion, they go good enough with the 202 and tripple webbers...

no i said my car is a slug too hehe
just sometimes it feels **** unless u slam it from a standing start

i woul dnever go aftermarket because i want to to start perfectly every time since its my work ute

but i will wait till i get a 2000 model vvti 1uz

if i did go aftermarket i would not waste my time and i would instanly twin turbo it with an autronic since i camn get good prices and free wiring jobs hehe

the engine isnt sluggish its the auto

maybe once kdog finished the tiptronic controllers
then ill trick the auto up to shift harder this is main reason for it being sluggish

but look slike everyone these days is finding it hard to make devices

so at the moment im looking for more reliable sources and once i do i will make alot of these so to get a very good price and make enough for everyone

waiting 10 months for things is not right but anyway

once u get used to it it feels sluggish hehe

im pretty sure a holden 308 would go better than most std 1uz just not as smooth heheh

i know htis is a 1uz forum but im just sayin it how it is im not biast i like and work on everything from 50 dollar geminis to 150 000 dollar mustangs

Don't you have a POWER button hooked up?

Mine goes to just before redline with it ON, and about 5500 with it OFF and foot flat.
