What Will Megasquirt Give Me Over Std ECU ?

Hi, I've been reading various threads for a while now and finally have taken the plunge and bought a V8 Soarer which I intend to transplant into a Miata.

It seems to me that it will be easier to fit a squirt than to trace and wire in the std ECU. But obviously the squirt costs, so will it give me any other benefits, power, economy, simplicity etc.

Obviously I'll be running a performance intake and exhaust (without Cats) but I won't be going any further than that.

Thanks

On the stock ecu, the 1uz could really use a tune. Its rich from factory, so leaning it out would give you more power (I think ive seen somewhere between 10-30whp).

Add in your bolt ons + a good tune. Not only will you have more power than the stock ECU could give you, I bet your gas mileage would increase dramatically.

if u think a squirt is better than factory ecu then yr dreaming
std ecus are only rich after 90% throttle
just get a basic super afc to lean it off u need

Sideshow - why do you say that, in what way is the std ECU better ?

as a whole u cant beat std ecus
from past experiences of all the bloody shitboxes i sometimes get in about 80% of aftermarket ecus will have cold start problems and rough idle and response
as most tuners dont keep the car for afew days to tune the cold start in the morning
std ecus have many many failsafes
aftermarket ones dont
just depends what u want in the end
a nice daily driver or something that is just for flat out performance
the only downfall with std ecus is like red said they run rich from factory so they get less warranty claims on engines

Thanks.

TBH as I have bought a complete car I'd be happy to keep the std ECU really but I don't really have the ability / patience to work out what needs to be connected and I can't seem to find any specialists in the UK (if anyone can suggest one that'd be welcome).

And having seen a few Auto electricians in the UK I could end up with a £500 bill and it still not work properly.

Also a squirt means I'll be able to tune it to the new intake / exhaust - whilst I'm not yet familar with a Squirt I'm sure I can figure it out as I've tuned a few other ECUs in the past.

FFS, if I can get a standard ECU to work in a transplant you can.

Drop me a PM with your email addy and I'll drop you the wiring diagrams that will spark up the standard ECU.

So far the first 1UZFE powered Cobra has done 3000 trouble free miles miles since June when it passed its test and has now been put away for the winter although we are somewhat concerned at getting only 25 to 26 mpg as we'd like a bit more. I do suspect however that the car is getting a good thrashing when I'm not around.

Cheeers,

Tony
