Water Circulation

Hi All,
There are 2 radiator hose connections on the engine (1994 none VVTI) , from the front the hose with the thermostat (plastic right angle housing) goes to the lower radiator connection and the streight goes to the top radiator fitting.
Is this right and how is the circulation flow on these engines, is there a by pass system when the stat is closed.
Is there a circulation picture

Correct re: the radiator connections.
There's a thermostat bypass under the housing that goes through the oil cooler (LS400) and connects to a port on the left side of the engine near the engine mount.
