I am going to do a header-cat back exhaust on my SC400 and i am planing on using Apexi 3" "turbo" spec mufflers. I really enjoy the smooth sound of a stock system with no rear muffler and just resonators. instead of running straight pipe all the way back to the new Apex mufflers, which would sound loud and poppy (i like an aggressive straight exhaust as much as anyone else but i need at least one "quiet" car) i was thinking to add a pair of resonators like these here on ebay

I dont think i want to use the other straight "glass pack" type resonator as im looking to make it sound quiet and smooth.

So what do you guys think? Will the resonators do what i think they are going to do? what companies make a good oval type resonator? Im still trying to decide if i should use 2.5 or 3" tube, damn i wish someone made mandrel bends in 2.75"....

back when my corolla was 4ag powered, i decided to try somthing a little diffrent. I put a chamered muffler as hight up in the exhaust system as i could. directly connectoed to the header. and i put a resanator all the way to the back, this was the complete oppisite of what is normal, and so was the sound. it was very smooth and muted, loud enough to know you where going, but not loud enough to piss anyone off,

the dude at the muffler shop told me i was crazy, everone else after it was done told me it was awsome. cops sure didn't bother me. :-)

Burns Stainless carries 2.75" U bends in 304 stainless... BUT... what are you wanting to do? I cannot recall your goals with this car but keeping it quiet suggests mild.

Do you mean cat back or do you mean replacing headers and cats and the rest?

If your build is mild use 2.00" or 2.25" no larger. The stock front Y pipe is not bad. The 2nd Y is poor.

This is just my new SC400 daily driver. For whatever reason the exhaust system is full of water! I think this happened during the hard CA rains in which every intersection becomes a small lake. Im sure the exhaust was submerged. So this is my excuse to do a full exhaust.

What i meant by "header-cat back" was doing the exhaust from the cats that are at the ends of the headers, on back to the rear.

Now from my understanding, 2.5 inch pipe for a 2.0 liter 4cyl (each half of the engine) is a tad small and 3.0" is big. But i now realize this is according to S2000 owners, who have high revving high output motors. So i guess 2.5 is the size i am going to use.

At this point, forget I said "mild", i just want a clean sound.

Here are all the mufflers I debating over,

Apexi N1 Turbo or NA spec

Apexi Ws2 Turbo or NA spec

HKS Hyper Turbo or NA spec

HKS Hi power Ti Turbo or NA spec

Or blitz NuR spec 3" Turbo

My friend had a NuR spec on his SC300 and it was a Axel back system, boy did it sound smooth! But it didn't look like the NuR spec muffler shown above. The tip looked much longer and i doubt it was 3".

they looked like this.....

Dual 2.5 inch pipes from the stock manifolds and cats will definitely hurt the low and mid range power, response and efficiency with no top end power gains. This engine is overrated at 250hp and is more like 225hp stock. The accurately rated GS400 at 300hp uses the same 50mm (1.97") pipes as you have now. Keep in mind the Honda crowd is almost always manual transmissions and these guys rarely use under 3000rpm. The heavier automatic Lexus cars NEED torque in a BIG way. You want MORE not less low and mid rpm torque. Big pipes = less.

I have some very good info in the other thread "Standard size or 2 1/4
