"AI Oct 94 - '95 Toyota 1UZ-FE V8 28.8 pounds lighter than '94" .I was scrolling through an engine weight page and found this note at the bottom of the page. We know that there where some changes in 95' but is it true it lost some weight, and how so. I don't know what AI refers too, but its at the bottom of this site, http://www.35pickup.com/mulligan/weight.txt

Interesting.

I can't see it being possible unless they reduced the weight of the crank, the rods, and the pistons.

The 95-96 has cast alloy fuel rails, instead of billet steel - maybe 1lb tops there.
It has no CSI - maybe 1/2lbs tops.

Thats all the major changes that would affect weight.

If they compared an SC400 motor to an SC400 motor, or an LS400 motor to an LS400 motor, then I can't see it possible, unless they made the crank lighter.

i don't know that's why i put it up here. Do we know if the 95-97 still has the beefy rods? The pistons come out to the same 10.4 comp ratio as the vvt-i i wonder if this is when some of the internals changed?

is everyone sure the blocks are 100% the same? they coulda windowed this or that, shaved off a little unnecessary bulk here and there..

The whole block weighs about 45lbs, you aren't going to lose 30lbs weight from it.

And are you fuel rails billet or cast?

they looked like the std billet alum aftermarket fuel rails avaliable for any car on the market

contrasting to my buick that has a tubular stainless fuel rail.

45lbs? is that a guess or have people weighed bare blocks before?

Sorry, my memory was off

ENGINE BLOCK BARE WITH MAIN CAPS FITTED 37 kg

Or 81lbs.

Probably closer to 70lbs with no mains caps.

I wonder if the crank is a bit lighter as well. The early cranks are quite heavy, ~45 lbs if I recall. Maybe they took 5-10 lbs off that, 5-10 on getting rid of the hydraulic pump, some other changes.... it could all add up to 28.8 lbs.

Removing the hydro pump and fluids you can drop about a little more then 30 pounds exactly as I had tried to weigh all the crap when I removed it...An alternate fan setup should weigh around 10lbs... So a drop of around 20-25lbs should be expected.

When they went to vvti, they put in lighter and weaker rods. The marine 1uz has vvti, and the earlier rods. This info came from the fellow that did the r&d on the marine engine.

we know that happening with the vvti models, but i am talking about the change between the 90-94 motors and the 95-97 motors.

I got a 95 and i have the hydro fan.

BTW' the LS seems to not have the hydro fan, (or 96 up?)

Guys, don,t tell me i have weak rods and pistons, i want to put boost someday in that car!!!!!
