Instrument cluster needed?

I'm in the process of swapping a 1UZ from a 1996 SC400 into a Subaru (w/ a manual gearbox).

Is the original SC400 instrument cluster needed in order for this engine run and run properly? Nothing I see in the wiring diagrams (or in searches here) indicates that the cluster is required, but electrons are unruly little bastards so I want to be certain.

Appreciate any insight you can share.

Cluster is not needed. If you want your Subaru cluster to work, just feed it the correct signals it is expecting.
