I have a 1998 LS400 with a cluster problem. I had the original unit in a specialist instrument repair shop for 8 weeks and they could not fix the problem. Basically after 10 minutes of driving all four gauges (fuel, rpm, speed and temp) would power down and give no reading, yet all the other lights and the computer still worked. They had given up on the fault finding so I took it to another recommended repair agent and he fried the board (the clue I should have had was his statement that "its very complicated isn't it").
So now the car is unusable. I asked Lexus dealer replacement cost and its over NZ$8000. Thats not a typo, the cost for the PCB and gauges is stupidly high, and it takes 3 weeks from Japan for shipping (i.e someone probably makes one up!).
The 1998 model had the VVTi V8 and the 5 speed box and multifunction display that goes the across the bottom of the RPM and Speedo.
Does anyone know of a wrecker/mate in NZ or OZ that has a 1998 LS400 car or front cut that might have the instrument cluster still in. I have been told that the cluster is the problem but there is no way I am going to spend serious money on parts unless I know they will fix the problem. The dismantlers I have phoned here in NZ don't have anything at present, so any help/info will be massively appreciated.
