im wondering how much it would cost to put a 1uz-fe in a AE86 with a five speed (props to sprinterTRD). supposing that i do it one the cheap and dont go all out on the high performance parts, how much would a LS400 1uz-fe cost? and what specifically do i need to perform this swap, parts wise?

please dont blast me for asking the biggest question first, im a bonified noobie at this engine swap thing.

Depends dude.
Auto? manual?
Legal? illegal?
Depends if anything on the 1uz you buy is broken.
Depends if you want to upgrade the brakes.
Dodgy? or well done?

To do it properly would probably be over 10k USD
But you might get away for 2k USD if you do EVERYTHING yourself.

And what do you need?
Motor, loom, ignitors, afm, ecu, autobox and front sump.
Everything will be custom or modified.
The actual list is as long as my... errr.. its long.

Things like radiator hoses, oils, filters, heater hoses, clamps, terminal.
The list is some what endless, like my... er... yeah.

As Peewee said, its a long list, here are some generic things, that you'll have to buy, steal or borrow (to do it reasonably well and reliably) - you should be able to work out prices for these sorts of things:
1UZFE Engine
Air flow meter and ECU
Flywheel
Gearbox
adapter plate
water pump
power steering kit
cam belt
cam bearings
Distributor rotors
clutch thrust and shaft bearings
Clutch and pressure plate
Thermostat
Fuel pump
Electrical
Misc hoses and stuff ups
exhaust
certification
fittings

Some of the stuff you'll have to fabricate or get made:
gearbox mounts
engine mounts
relay and Fuse box
heat sheilding
guard for alternator
cut radiator top cross member under bonnet for front
Modify sump and oil pick up
modify Exhaust
replace cam belt
Remove fuel lines and run new ones
Overhaul alternator

Allow loads of cash for all the things that I haven't mentioned, and for teething troubles...

Hope that helps

Muzz

i gotta a few new questions,

1) which manual trans. do you recommend to use? would the stock 4AG 5 spd possibly work? also where could i get an adaptor plate for the connection?

2) Does anyone know a good shop/site that sells some of these parts? or is a local junkyard a good source?

3) should i trust ebay for sourcing the engine? what should i look for engine-wise for condition?

No it wont.
Not strong enough.
Cheapest string enough gearbox would be the W58.
CRS (Australia) sell 1UZ to W58 conversion kits for ~$1400AU.

Ring around... if you are lazy as you sound, you wont get this done.

Dont buy an engine off ebay.
Try wreckers and importers.
You want them to replace it if you find its stuffed after installing.

problem with getting a W58 tranny is that i dont know if it is availible in the US, i will need to check around and see. also, im not lazy, i just havent started actually doing anything yet, i am just seeing if i could feasibly do it. Thanks for the tips.

MA70 non-turbo Supra's all use W58
All MA61 Supra's use W58
early JZA80 non-turbo Supra's use an updated version of the W58
They are literally everywhere.
Everytime your parents take you for a drive you'll probably drive past a dozen cars with W58's

Get on the phone and make some calls.

If you are going to do it on the cheep, Don't bother doing the conversion!
Brake upgrades, diff & gearbox upgrade is a must otherwise you will just have problems
You will need to upgrade the suspension as well due to the extra load.
Depending on how handy you are, will greatly change the cost of the project.

I manufactured everything myself, bell housing, flywheel, diff conversion, brake conversion, engine mounts, aluminium radiator, fuel system, suspension, wiring and chassis mods to strengthen the car. I purchased new bits where required and the cost came to around 5K wvwn with a lot of good deals from people.
