I need a new project

The 1UZFE EGR Delete Kit is available for sale here.
Nah, the Gogo idea doesn't float my boat.

I've found a couple of potential engines in the States (I get ultra cheap freight from there) but they're 2008 or earlier.

Trying to work my way through engine placement to try and avoid the ICV ruling as the difference between a 2007 engine (which won't pass) and a later engine is around $10,000.

I don't plan on falling into the money trap on this build. Doesn't mean I wont.

Hello Rod

The mid engined vehicle with FWD trans (diff locked) out to 4x4 diffs is something thats getting done over here in many 4x4 trials trucks. 1uz with windom trans is a popular choice as are the SR20 and 4G63 turbo motors. Of course they only do about 30-40km/h tapped out due to driving through two final drive diffs. I like your idea. FWD diff idea is pretty easy too.

I think it may fail the noise test.

Things are progressing slowly.

Hopefully I'll have the donor vehicle and the victim in the next week.

As my son's want to drive my Rover I have the green light to keep it for another year or so by my wife Helen. I knew I married her for a good reason!

Well, I've turned to the dark side.

I now have a 2008 HSV VE GTS in my garage.

I almost have the wiring out of it and hopefully the motor and transmission sitting on the floor soon after.

The car is a 6.2litre LS3 with a 6 speed auto and LSD.

The car is a total loss having suffered an huge front 3/4 hit that drove the dogleg into the rear tyre.

4 airbags went off as did the seat belt tensioners so it was big. The roof, 1 B pillar and 3 dorrs were removed at the scene to get the occupants out.

There's still the driver's left boot jambed between the A pillar and the transmission tunnel. He took his foot with him and interstingly I haven't found a drop of blood in the car. The dash board is 200mm narrower than before the acident.

The engine is the 317kw version and as the whole car cost 3 times the price of a 1UZ half cut so I think I've done well.

I can sell off 4 wheels (the spare is the same as a front wheel so it replaces the shattered wheel) ,both tiallights, a door, a boot spoiler, the magnetic suspension from 3 corners and Brembo brakes for the same 3 corners and sundry switch panels. If I get back a grand ot two I have a very cheap engine.

If I can get the stereo and navigation running I'll use it in my project.

I figure I spent $40,000 getting simillar power out of my 1UZ and this engine has it stock so I can use the factory ECU and all the pllution gear so it will pass the ADR's without a problem.

The only damage to the engine is 2 broken coils, a smashed turtle and a damaged plastic belt idler. The headers are undamaged but the centre section of the exhaust is toast thankfully all 4 cats are good and all 3 mufflers are good.

The fuse box was right in the firing line and is beyond salvation.

I plan of getting Sideshow to look at the wiring and we'll delete what we don't need and then try and coax it into life.

I found half a hubcap off a Mazda buried amongst the carnage. Wouldn't want to have been in that car.

The wheels have yellow spray paint on them from the Police Accident Investigation Squad so it was most likely a fatal for the other vehicle.

I've been around a lot of heavilly damaged vehicles in 30 years as a motor insurer and this really impresses me with how well the car has absorbed the impact and protected the occupants.

Just to really annoy people my trip to the "dark side" (yes Luke I AM your father) the engine, transmissiona nd exhaust system complete wit the car's wiring loom cost me $3,500.00!

Not too shabby for 317kw & 550nm.

Fortunately I'm not addicted to high tech and will go with any tart of an engine that can give me a good time on the cheap!

I'm getting the same power as my supercharged 1UZ at 1/15th the cost! Plus it includes a 6 speed tiptronic trans.

Who said us old farts aren't smart?

Nice. Nothing wrong with a bit of dinosaur technology for something different. Especially at that price.

If you can't get the Navigation equipment working or change your mind and want to offload it give us a yell. My sister wants a GPS setup for her SSV ute.

Well done a good purchase.

A cam and a tune will squeeze a bit more out of the LS3 too.

I remember getting the interior out of a wrecked RS2000 Escort many moons ago in the UK and found a finger attached to part of a hand under the seat. I just left it there, I bet one of the junkyard dogs had a tasty snack later that night.

So what is the engine going in to?

hey zuffen did the ecu survive
the problem with the ve comms is the ecu is front right side of car behind headlight
we normally throw those looms out and buy a rear mounted ecu loom
but depending if u rear mount the motor then a front mounted ecu might be better
do u plan to runt he 6spd tip tronic
as theres 2 ways we can go around it

Strangely enough a Nissan Patrol does enter the equation.

This afternoon I finished adapting a Patrol transfer case to the 6l80E auto. I'm pretty impressed with it it looks factory and should do what I want it to do.

The engine is going in an early '80's Mitsubishi L300 van.

This vehicle was chossen as it looks like it could have been built in the '60's or 70's and it has a full chasssis which is important under the RTA guidelines for engine capacity. If I used a 1986 version that looks identical I wouldn't be able to use this engine. Go figure??

I plan on chopping the van into a pickup (another benefit of the chassis) and mounting the engine facing backwards either just in front of the rear axle or partly over it. I'll set the vehicle up on a see saw arrangement and mover the engine and trans back and forward until I'm happy with the balance of the vehicle. I would like it a little rear heavy to allow for the driver nad passenger to bring it to around a 50:50 weight distribution.

As the trans will be in front of the engine the transfer case will send the power to the rear using the front drive output.

I plan on using a Nissan Patrol rear axle flipped and shortened as they are tough, cheap and I have spares for them. I can do a high pinion conversion and once flipped it will be a low pinion which will allow the engine to drop lower in the tray. This will give me 6 stud wheels (of which I have a dozen or so) so I'll use Mitsi L200 front hubs which just happen to be 6 stud with the same PCD as the Nissan.

I plan on using Patrol brakes both ends as they are again big, cheap and effective.

Should be quick as it will weigh around 1,250kg (or 600kg less than the Commodore the engine came out of) so the power/weight ratio will be more than satisfactory.

I'm really enjoying the mental excersise of this project as I don't want it to be like the Rover where it was a money pit. This will be finished and running for less than half the cost of the Rover's engine alone and be just as much fun.

Jim,

I couldn't open page 6 until I'd done the above post so now I'll answer your questions.

Yes the ECU survived with a couple of broken cooling fins. The fuse box basically exploded. The loom is pretty history as I had to cut it to get it out of the car. The engine and trans looms are good so I have enough to work with.

I plan on using the tiptronic but the shifter is pretty sad as the tunnel collapsed and smashed the mounting base. I've yet to look into if it can be repaired.

The electronic throttle pedal took a big hit and the pedal arm is now a bit shorter than when it left the factory but I think its OK as well. These are only $40.00 on US ebay so if it's dead its no biggie.

The BCM took the full force of the impact and I think its dead. I still have it but it is now somewhat bent. I understand I don't need it to run either the engine or trans so one less computer to bother with.

I've been in email contact with Justin Stark so you'll be involved in getting it running!

It has to pass the IM240 test but I don't see that should be too hard to do if we have it running as the factory intended.

I'll be using all aftermarket instruments.

yer we have wired afew lately
got one in a rodeo nearly done
got one in a vp comm to do next week
did an ls7 loom for a cobra kit car
and we have done an ls7 with 6sp tip tronic box in a cobra last year
did afew in boats last year one was ls3 and other was ls2 in a jet boat
guy recons its quicker than his friends with an old 454
and now that we have figured how to run the ls1 ecu on the old vn vp 5lts
we r converting the old memcal type ecus to the new ls1 ecus for easier tuning

basically theres 2 ways to do it
the aussie way or the usa way

aussie way uses gear shifter to send signal to bcm which then sends sig to ecu
thru can bus
prob might arise in the bcm because alot of things will be missing
as we have never done a ve bcm wire up in another car we r not sure what will happen
but all u do is maybe turn off security in ecu and worry bout rest

usa way uses black box to send tap up and tap down signals to ecu
only prob with htis is u need to mod the aussie shifter if u use it which is very fiddly
or you use old shifter and put tap up and tap down on sterring wheel or somewhere else
instead of modding aussie shifter
to do it all properly is easily close to 2g maybe even more depending what u need

I can do it for 50 bucks but I'll have to do it
When I get spare time between 8 and 5
So might take me afew years
Hehe

Jim,

If you could let me know what I need to salvage from the wiring harness I'll put it aside as I intend to get rid of a lot of it.

My garage can only stand so much junk and I have a heap of 1UZ stuff to dispose of to make room for this project.
