The most common cause for inoperative AC is gas leakage. When the gas pressure is insufficient, the system will be inhibited from operation. Every hose, component and connection in the system is potentially a source of leakage - however there are known methods of testing this and its recommended you leave it to a specialist.
After leakage, compressor failure, sensor/switch failure and control module failure are all possible causes too.
