Can anyone tell me at what revs the fuel pump should change speed?

I have a persistent miss at 2,500RPM and I suspect the fuel pump cannot keep up as it has not switched speeds.

Before I grovel around under the car I thought it a good idea to get some advice.

No David I haven't checked the ignition yet,

Today is the first day I've driven the car since having the engine putting the engine back in (for the 3rd time).

I thought I'd start with the easy stuff and work toward the ignition.

It will rev without load but breaks down at 2,500 under load. It sounds like ignition. I'll check the fuel pump voltage tonight and then look at the ignition.

I'm at work at the moment and thought I may get a head start on the problem.

Will take some photos and post them this weekend of the almost finished project.

First of all... Congrats... on your success. It also sounds like TPS is having some minor problems. I have an extra one i can send. Give me your TPS part number. It should be compactible.

David,

Thanks for the offer.

I should be able to use my spare Trac switch or in desperation I can use my spare Soarer T/b.

One advantage of having two of everything is I can swap bits to see what has failed or what I've mucked up.

The trip to work wasn't too long. About 3km including a stop for fuel! It's very handy being so close to home.

just been testing a 7mgte

the fuel pump voltage change is exactly on 4000 rpm

id say 1uz is similar

i hardly ever run the 2 stage voltage to the pumps

just incase the customer wants to do mods to the engine

and that means the fuel pump switchin to 12v could lean things out if the pump is still runnin 10 volts

Thanks guys I will sort it out eventually.

I tend to agree with David my problem appears to be ignition.

Or an easy way might be to check the fuel pressure. If pressure is constant it doesn't matter what speed you pump is running, you should be getting enough fuel.

I think fuel is the culprit.

I went over all the wiring and everything is connected. All power in and out of the ECU is correct and accounted for.

The engine will rev to 6,000 without load but coughs at 2,500 to 3,000.

I picked up a new fuel filter this morning and will try that. I suspect Kdog has the right answer.

After the filter I will look into the fuel pressure. I'll try jumping the pump voltage to 12 and see if that works.

I can swap out the O2 sensors, AFM, coils, igniters, caps, rotors etc with spares I have. I figure I can swap everything electronic bar the loom to finding the problem. I'm not looking forward to knock sensors they are just too hard to get at.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Kris,

I actually got under the car yesterday and swapped the o2 sensors.

The car revs a little more freely but still not as hard or as quick as I think it should.

I think I'll replace plugs, leads, caps and rotors and see what happens. I need to replace all this when I do my new engine so I may as well buy them now.

To date I haven't even removed a spark plug. I could get a susrprise when I do.

The plug leads are dated 1991 (on all three engines!) so are well past their use by date.

Rod I found water had got down into the spark plug cavity and the spark was earthing out through the moisture. I think it is time for some new plugs though. runs lots better now. Kris
