I've got a set of ARP mains for building a 1UZ, but when I replace the stock main studs with the ARPs you loose the 'centering' property the stock studs have. The ARP's are cut in the diameter of the thread but the stock studs are bigger in diameter where the main cap meets the block, making the main cap to center on the studs. Anyone thought about this? It seems the 3UZ has bolts and no centering system either, but hey, why does the 1UZ have it then?

Good point; you're referring to the "shoulders" on the OEM studs that make them act a bit like dowels right?

Maybe dowels would be good insurance if people are concerned with the mains moving around a bit at high RPM with the smaller ARP hardware?

yups, the dowel property. I will research it a little bit better, but making dowel pins might be a good idea! Anyways, the 3UZ doesn't have it at all

Interesting article. I am here trying to figure out where my oil was being burned. I was looking at the tops of all 8 pistons and the passenger bank was fairly clean, all the valve relieves were stained the same brownish hue. The driver side had 2 front pistons that were dark brown/gold with black in the middle... the back 2 were VERY clean... wierd. The head gaskets did not have any obvious holes/marks. The block had an area where the gasket did not stick to, it was bare metal and the rest of the block had an even layer of gasket material.
