I've purchased some 2UZ parts recently for my 1UZ build. Generally the interchangeability looks to be very good for the water pump, tensioner and its idler.

The 2UZ water pump has a return passage that the 1UZ pump and block do not have. EDIT: I've just confirmed from Toyota's tech info that passage is the seal leakage hole. There's another leakage hole on the housing that I thought was for detecting seal leakage, but it's for detecting air leakage (?) See info below from the FSM.

The 2UZ water pump also comes with a composite type gasket which is part metal, part neoprene, which looks the business. I'm not a silicone sealer kind of guy and prefer "real" gaskets.

Water pump was under $100 USD.
Tensioner was under $40
Idler was under $60

cribbj,
I am holding a new water pump in my hand that arrived today for my 1UZ. It is the 12 blade impeller that you depict for the 2UZ. Looks like more flow with the 12 blades.
I notice you state the return port must be plugged, what is the purpose on this flow on the 2UZ block?

At just a quick look that bypass you talk of looks to be hole that when the seal fails the coolant comes out of.Have a look around were the seal would be,is there any other drilled holes?

I wont know for sure until I look at the 1UZ block but it appears like if the return passage cribbj indicates is not plugged, it will flow water out of the engine when installed on the 1UZ. The port does not mate up to anything.

I think the plug can left alone without plugging. The 12 blades are the upgraded version of the 1uzfe. The original 1uzfe water pump only get 6 blades.

I edited the original post and photos. That passage is for detecting seal leakage as per the Toyota FSM.

I know, I know! OLD thread haha

But, I just wanted to clear this up as I am buying the oil pump, tensioners, water pump, timing belt, etc for my 1UZ tomorrow and was hoping to save a trip to the Lexus dealer...I work at Toyota :)

Thanks,

Andrew
