Hi , I am the owner of the 1UZ Volvo in Thailand, I have just seen this thread, sorry I am not normally active on any forums, this is my first ever post or reply. David has helped me a lot with various parts supply, thanks David for the always fast response. I would like to share any information about turbocharging the 1UZ, I will send any info I gain to David or post it. I believe the 1UZ it is yet to be fully proven as a alternative to the 2JZ. I have run and tuned high power 2JZ’s for several years and wanted something different.
For the last few months I was testing a 1UZ engine in standard build, I bought the Volvo in question as an unfinished project from a friend that I was helping, that’s a long story. The only engine mod was with metal head gaskets and ARP studs, the rest of the additions from me basically included a Garrett GT42 with SPL comp wheel. Usual stuff, 1000cc injectors, 2 x 044 Bosch pumps, HKS GTII wastegate, large intercooler, Autronic SM2 + R500 CDI. Etc. Botched headers and standard intake at the moment. gearbox is a Supra 6 speed, custom flywheel & OS 4 plate clutch.
Getting good work done in general over here is a problem, unless you supervise it yourself, or import built parts. Lots of frustrating problems, eg. modified skyline rear end broken, drive shaft out of alignment, etc. The combination of huge torque going into poorly assembled parts, not good.. Something like this really needs something like a built Ford 9” rear end as we are doing in a race car project.
Anyway I pushed the tune with the standard engine it to 1.4 bar using race gas, but power would end at 6000 rpm, inj duty cycle was around 40% + at 5500 . Never managed to dyno it due to various local problems and logistics, it certainly went, probably around 500 HP- peak. Admittedly not daily driven but over a few months many hard sessions of full power runs, anti lag starts, no engine problems, apart from silly drive train issues and a crank seal oil leak.
Then 2nd stage, as mentioned in the start of this thread, forged pistons, rods and cams & springs etc., CR around 8.5, finally installed and now running a safe 1.6 to 1.7 bar for now, to give you an idea, inj duty is up to 60%, tune probaby near MBTT at around 11.3 AFR. For sure a big improvement in the top end, pulls hard to 7500, but then falls off, it should be going to 8K+. So-ooo the car is going in the shop for a new rear end, properly constructed headers, bigger AR Will take a month or so, when that’s done with the new headers & bigger AR it should allow 8K+ & free up the upper rpm. The GT 42 is good for 2.4 bar from past experience, as long as the block & heads will take it. I will take it to 2 bar first and see how things hold up for a while. I also will be looking for a custom intake manifold with 90 or 100mm TB, the standard 70mm is going to be a restriction as it probably already is.
Don’t worry I will dyno it when it’s done, either way it turns out, good or bad. Hopefully good with some videos.
