I get 20-25mpg outa my 1uz taco 2wd an me mate with 4wd manual taco gets 25 all the time ,open road of course, aussie taco/hilux is a bit diff to US, ours have full box chassis and older style torsion bar frfont end, this is the best all round car Ive owned an the 1uz is THE best motor

Sounds great =] I have been loving my Tacoma ever since I first saw it. The truck is really light which makes it awesome to drive off-road. I'm waiting for more parts coming until I can keep moving along with my work. It's going to be like a dream when it's in and running.

The seller of parts is a jerk. His attitude is pretty bad so there is now way I would do business with him. I'm using some ignitors I already have which are the same part number, just need to wire my harness for em. No stress.

Im having the heads looked at right now and I also took a couple more things to get powdercoated yesterday. New head gaskets should be coming in anyday now.

The best that I can get on my 4WD Tacoma is 13 mpg combining locals (mostly) and some highways. This 13.8 mpg is for driving real slow. The manufacturer advertised it as 16 - 19 mpg, but that's not true. For a full tank, I can get the max of 250 miles out of its 18 gallons.

There is something that is depleting efficiency.

My tacoma gets (V6) at worst of 15 mpg of which I havent seen in a long time. Usually it is 18-19. I mostly drive highways about 2:1 to 40mph and slower roads. It is a prerunner.

There's nothing that's is depleting efficiency with my truck. Both V6 Tacomas, 1 is Prerunner and 1 is SR5 4WD, are not the same. The 4WD has about 200 lbs heavier than the non-4WD due to the transfer case. That's why it consumes more gas. Also, it's slower than the non-4WD due to its weight. If a car has a MPG listed, it's only an "estimate". If you look at the sticker on the window of the new cars, it always says "an estimated MPG". Last year, the Federal just passed the law requiring all auto manufacturers to give a closer and more accurate estimate of the MPG.

I just don't think about fuel mileage. I plan for it (make sure bearings are greased and in new condition, keep proper air in tires, don't put big winch bars or haul barrels of water around) and I know I can make it better by not driving. But that's about it.
Now that I'm putting in the 1uz premium fuel engine I just feel glad that the engine is only 4.0L and that my truck is really light. If your the type that doesn't check air pressure in tires, doesn't run synthetic, doesn't check the driveline, bearings or ignition system regularly then you shouldn't be complaining about estimated fuel mileage. I'm not directing this at anyone but just stating obvious things that can be serviced to give you better fuel economy.
The best advice for saving fuel is letting your friends drive you places instead of offering :naughty: and don't just make trips to the store for something that you can get on your way across town the next day. BUT this is a whoooole different thread!

Not try to argue, but 200 lbs will make that big of a difference? No way. Either your driving habbits (primarily acceleration and highway cruise speed), your location (like environment) you drive, or some vehicle related issue that could be improved will cause that. I cant really think of anything else that would be a viable option. If I have a passenger, by your basis of argument, then our vehicles should get the same mpg. Which is defenitely not the case.

Driving 80 in my truck typically shows about 19 mpg, drving 58 (plus or minus 2) gets me about 21 over long distances. I record my milage every fill-up lol.

No, I'm not complaining about the fuel consumption at all. It's just that I'd like to point out about my truck fuel consumption comparing to the post by another member, which I forgot whom. The spec is here: http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Spec_Glance.aspx?year=2004&make=Toyota&model=Tacoma&trimid=-1. Or you might look at the picture from the factory. My truck only has 29K miles on it, and I maintain it perfectly so there're no issues with tires, air filter....etc.

Yes, 200 addtional lbs in weight can dramatically slow down the acceleration and the MPG. If you put four 50 lbs bags of sand on the truck and drive it everyday, the MPG will be so different. It's the same as you go carpooling with others or by yourself. But there's 1 thing that I agree is the traffic areas that I drive to work is horrible. It's just a Stop-and-Go traffic.

But very relative. Would you agree that the effect is going to be much larger on vehicles with a smaller engine, like a toyota prius when compared to a dodge Cummins? You would barely notice anything on the dodge. Well beside it breakin all the time lol. Remember it says 'as much as' meaning studies show at worste it can be.....bla bla lba.

I just hauled 2000 pounds of pellets about 160 miles, I saw a 2 mpg drop (about 17mpg all highway is what I got). Just dropped my cruise speed to 55-60 and kept it outta overdrive.

My only point is weight isn't near as important as many people make it seem when compared to other factors.

Smitherz, UPDATES! I wanna see whats goin on with your truck.

Hey guys, I just picked up some more stuff I had powdercoated this week. Fuel lines look like they are dripping black now, better than new. The injectors are on their way back from an injector specialist in Washington. I can't wait to see the flow test results of before and after.

The heads will be finished sometime in January. The engine tuner is doing me a favor so I told him he could do it on his own schedule. He said he would have it done in a couple weeks. The headgaskets should be here anyday now. Things are lookin good. Everytime I drive my truck I daydream about how it would sound and feel to have the V8 in there... :684: *droool*

But I did get my little trailer completely rebuilt, powdercoated and decked out with Brazilian Ipe, woohoo! http://www.ajsmith.uk.com/deckhardf.htm

I need to get some pictures up here quick before everyone gets cranky.

no doubt. It's a minimal increase. The only time you'd notice a considerable jump in mpg is doing multiple things at once (ie- weight, tires, intake, exhaust, etc. etc.). I am really looking forward to getting my V8 into my little taco. Not only is it 300hp, but the mpg will definitely get better. All that hp pulling that lightweight p/u. I'm going to have to put 100lbs over each rear tire to get traction.

What's funny is I was thinking that very thing when I went out earlier! I have a couple of old sets of tires I'm saving so I can burn em! Mine's a 2wd though, so they won't be mudders. The first ones will be the old 14"ers I took off a while ago. Then I'll burn the 16"ers. Then I'll have to go bigger!

In the meantime...

In the meantime I rebuilt my little motorcycle/quad trailer my dad made when I was 12. This is the perfect trailer now that matches my truck just right. It had a worn out plywood deck and the paint was worn out letting things rust. I stripped it down and had the whole thing powdercoated crinkle coat black with some metallic red for the fenders  might as well! I couldn't think of any other color. Then I used some hard wood decking and all new hardened and galvanized bolts. This thing is going to last the rest of my life and my dad was pretty surprised to see it in it's new condition!

I'm just not sure if I'm going to run LED or regular lights. Also sometime I need to do something with the rims and I'll have to take the wheels in to let a machine dismount the tires. Ah well it's fun. I just hope no one steals it. Everyone that sees me with it tries to buy it off of me... and that's when it was rusty looking.
