I started on making a new flywheel tonight at work. I had bought 2 tilton flywheels lightly used from a nascar re builder that I get some parts from on occasion. I had been meaning to use them for mesurements to make a compatible fly wheel up for the 1UZ-FE and 1GZ-FE. One of the things the machine shop I work at makes is gear reduction units. Some of witch are VERY large. The shafts for our larger units are made from stainless steel, Titanium and 4140. When the input shafts are turned they wind up with a slug at one end that gets cut off and scraped. These are solid and between 4" and 10" long and 6" and 28" in diameter. SS and Ti have there own scrap bins but 4140 just get dumped into the "crap" bin. I can get it for .25 cents a pound. I am planing on just bolting the new flywheel through the stock flex plate but I might try making a larger diameter one and pressing the ring gear on. Would any one be interested In one of these things? The time it takes to build the set ups and fixtures and make one vs. 5 or so is not that much worse. I was kinda planning to make 2 and cut like 4 spare blanks for my self. I may also be able to get a guy at my old shop to wire EDM out the 23 spline hubs for the clutch disks to use with the R154.

So would there be any one interested If I made a few extra flywheels? aproximit price would be $150 for a 9" OD for tilton 7.25" tripple disk, and around $200 for one with 11" OD and a step cut for you to press a ring gear onto.

The tilton and quartermaster 7.25 in triple plate clutches are very popular with NASCAR builders and they put in a new clutch almost every race. I see the used units for sale on ebay all the time for $100 - $400 with only 200 to 500 miles on them. They are completely rebuildable and I have found brand new replacement disc sets online for about $300. I had planed to make the flywheel buy a $200 used clutch and a $300 new disc set and a $100 tilton hydraulic through out and put it together my self. That's about $600 out of pocket and some time. Suprastore.com has a tilton triple setup that's all set to go for the MK4 and they are asking $5880.00 for it. I have seen these used in 1400+ RWHP turbo cars and hold just fine. If I can put one togeather for $600 to $800 I would give it a try. They are hard to kill and rebuildable so $800 up front and $350 every 3 or 4 years works out cheeper then $600 every other year like I have been doing.

Hear are some pics of the tilton flywheels that I am using for measurements to make mine, the fixture for turning the new flywheels and the first blank being rough turned.

hey rocco, I'd highly reccomend using pie jaws when turning flywheels as the traditional 3 jaw setup distorts the flywheel when you tighten it down.

I have been so busy that I haven't checked on hear for a bit. I agree with you on the the lathe jaws thats why the blank was still so thick in those pictures. I will finish the crank bolt surface first then bolt the blank to the hub in the other picture to finish the rest of the turning. I haven't finished them yet as the layth I use has been being rebuilt and upgraded for the past 8 weeks, but I should be getting back to them soon.
