Hi guys, just picked up a 98 gs400. Making a parts list for a build and wondering if picking up a set of stock 1st gen 1uz rods is a worthwhile upgrade. Im not sure if Im going nitrous or turbo yet (I have experience with both), but I dont want to be sweating the thin rods every time I run the car. Highest I plan on going is 500whp. TIA

Depends how far you're looking at going to get to 500WHP, which equates to roughly 700FWHP. A not inconsiderable amount of power from 4.3 litres.

When chasing that sort of power I would want low compression pistons plus far better rods than stock early 1UZ.

Do a lot of research before committing to the early rods.
I not ARGO in Australia made 36 sets of rods 15 years ago for this Forum and I haven't heard of any failing so not a bad effort. They still make them plus the Aussie Dollar is cheap so a good time to buy.

We also had a group buy of Ross pistons around the same time. Kelford in NZ make good camshafts and their Dollar is worth less than the Aussie!

Cometic head gaskets and ARP fasteners should also be on your shopping list.
