Truck stopped near Leeds yields $1 million in hidden cash
A truck stopped Wednesday by Birmingham police and state transportation officials yielded nearly $1 million, Birmingham police said today. The money, $989,000 by a preliminary count, was found in 20 bundles in a hidden compartment. The truck was stopped Wednesday afternoon westbound on Interstate 20 near Leeds.
Police said the two men with the truck were cited for violations including no drivers licenses. The pair consented to a search of the truck and then denied knowledge of the money when it was discovered, police Capt. Mike Fisher said.
The men were released but the money was confiscated.
