http://dynotec.co.uk/mediac/400_0/media/unichp1.jpgWhat is the Unichip?
The Unichip is a highly developed re-programmable piggyback microcomputer, which works in conjunction with the vehicles original ECU (electronic control unit) which is fitted to almost all modern vehicles with fuel injection. It allows the vehicles full potential to be realized in respect of engine efficiency, power and perhaps most importantly fuel consumption. A factor not often associated with performance enhancing chips. The Unichip is more than just a chip!

What is an ECU?
The ECU (electronic control unit) is the brains behind the brawn! It’s basically a small computer, which makes all the decisions about what the engine and other components should be doing at any specific given time. It does this by looking at information gathered from various sensors around the engine. For example engine speed & position information would be provided by the crank angle sensor, Throttle position would be provided by the throttle position sensor, and the rate at which the engine is consuming air would be provided by the air flow sensor, to mention just a few.
When the ECU has gathered the information from all of the sensors it compares that information with data stored within its memory. This data is the ECU map. This map tells the ECU exactly what to do at that instant! How long to open the fuel injectors for and when to fire the spark for example, these being the main functions of the ECU. The ECU gathers this information and refers to the map many times a second to ensure the smooth and seamless running of the engine.

How does the Unichip improve my cars performance?
The Unichip does this by simply intercepting the information gathered by all of the engine sensors before it gets to the ECU, and alters it. By doing this the original ECU map can effetctively be altered. All of the changes to sensor information are stored within the Unichip giving the vehicle a new map, enabling the engine to reach its full potential.

Isn’t my car optimized from the factory?
No not always. The reason for this is manufacturers have to make certain compromises when developing an ECU. They have to accept that no two vehicles are the same due to production tolerances. Vehicles may be sold all over the world therefore climatic differences must be taken into account. Different countries have different qualities of fuel, which must also be taken into account. Service intervals have to be considered. Different driving styles need to be considered. Theses are just a few things that a manufacturer must consider which means the resulting compromises can be far from optimal.

How is the Unichip different then?
The Unichip is different in that it is mapped to YOUR cars specific requirements. This means that all of your cars modifications if any are taken into account and optimized without compromise! This is achieved by mapping the Unichip LIVE on a rolling road dynamometer. The dynamometer accurately measures the engines power to one tenth of a horsepower. This accuracy enables the fuel quantity and ignition timing to be altered over 476 individual points of engine speed and load with the same degree of accuracy, resulting in a completely optimum map.

Don’t other chip companies tune live?
Some other chip companies may claim to use a dynamometer in their development of pr-program chips. However their process is… shall we say hit and miss. They make changes to the manufacturers map, producing a chip and then testing it on a car fitted with the chip on a dynamometer. Alterations are then made to the chip and it’s refitted and so on! As you can appreciate this is a lengthy process, so to optimize 476 points would require a huge amount of time and effort, and even then that chip would only be optimized to that individual test vehicle. Infact most dealers of this type of chip don’t even have a dynamometer so cant even tell you what, if any these gains are!
In contrast every Unichip dealer has there own in house rolling road dynamometer so that they can individually tune your vehicle. DynoTec Developments is no exception. We have our own fully equipped 2wd rolling road dynamometer capable of measuring up to 650bhp. Our experienced dynamometer operators are experts in realizing your cars full potential using the Unichip.

What power increase can I expect?
The honest answer is we don’t know! And any chip company that tells you otherwise isn’t being honest. All the tuning process can do is give the engine what it requires, the correct amount of fuel and ignition point. If the map in your vehicle is already doing this then no chip can achieve any performance gains! All that we can promise with the Unichip is that everything will be optimum and you can’t get better than that!

Does the Unichip have any other features? The Unichip is re-programmable.
This means any subsequent modifications (cams, turbo, exhaust etc) can be exploited by once again optimizing the vehicles map. Simply having a further rolling road session does this. If a pre programmed chip where used a new chip would be required for each subsequent modification which would of course only be based on a vehicle with similar modifications.

Variable valve timing
The Unichip can control variable valve timing systems in order that they can be activated at different speed and load conditions than those originally set by the manufacturer.

RPM and turbo boost limits
The Unichip can eliminate the pre-set rpm and boost limits imposed by the manufacturer and implement new ones, thus releasing unexploited power. It can also record the maximum boost pressure and rpm attained.

Dual maps
The Unichip can automatically switch between two different MAPS. This is useful when running different fuel grades, such as 95 or 97 RON and different fuel types such as petrol and LPG. This ensures that maximum power and efficiency can be obtained from the selected fuel type.

Water Injection
This is used on turbocharged vehicles to lower the intake charge air temperature. The Unichip can control the amount of water injected based on the engines speed and load conditions. It also has the unique ability to equally distribute the water by injecting it relative to individual cylinder. When the water injection is active a different MAP is selected. The Unichip can automatically switch between two the MAPs when the water injection is switched off or the water level is low.

Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous Oxide can be controlled in an identical fashion to water injection. The flow of Nitrous Oxide is also stopped prior to the rev limit, this prevents the common problem of engines damaging backfires. Unlike other nitrous controllers, by being able to switch automatically between two MAPs the engine ignition timing optimized during nitrous use.

Additional Injectors
Heavily modified engines may find that the standard injectors cant deliver enough fuel for the engines requirements. In these cases additional injectors are required. These additional injectors are fully mapped on a 3D basis and can be phased in as the engine speed and load requires, they can also be timed to inject in phase with each individual cylinder.

Electronic Boost Control
Turbocharger boost levels can be altered and programmed across the complete rev range.

Variable Induction Control
The Unichip software can be programmed to control variable induction manifolds, such as directional flaps and differing length intake trumpets, based on the engines speed and throttle position.

Launch Control
The Unichip software can be programmed to lower the rpm limit only when the clutch is depressed. This allows turbocharged vehicles to build up boost pressure whilst still stationary and makes for rapid acceleration from rest by reducing turbo lag.

Full Throttle Gear Changes
This Unichip feature allows the driver to change gear whilst maintaining full throttle. This makes for very quick gear changes and helps to reduce turbo lag.

Road Speed Limiter
The road speed limiter can be removed from Imports and German Supercars, for those all important track days! The Unichip can also re-set the road speed limit fitted to many vehicles in order that maximum speeds can be set.

Speedo Conversion
The Unichip can convert electronic speedometers from KPH to MPH. This also has the added bonus of moving the road speed limit from 180KPH (112MPH) to 180MPH. Calibration can be carried out at the same time.

Electronic Speedo Calibration
Electronic Speedo’s can be re-calibrated by the Unichip on the dynamometer for improved accuracy and also to compensate for any gearing or wheel size modifications.

Shift Light
A bright LED can be illuminated by the Unichip to inform the driver to select the next gear without them having to take their eyes off the road to look at the rev counter. This helps ensure that maximum acceleration can be maintained.

Idle Speed Stabilization
The Unichip can sense that the throttle is closed and activate an idle stabilization map. This helps smooth the idle and reduce emissions of heavily modified engines i.e, camshafts, throttle body conversions etc.

NB: Some of these additional features require the fitment of additional interface modules.

A reply from Rainer from ALSC

Garry,

Thanks for posting the info, however, it is very general and there are exceptions to these "rules". For example, the Unichip can remove the road speed governor on many vehicles, however Toyota automatics aren't included I'm afraid.

To sumerise quickly for you, the Unichip can optimise fueling and timing on both the TT and V8 soarer, live on a chassis dyno, as correctly stated above. It cannot raise the rev limit on either, nor remove the road speed governor (manual TT's may be the exception here, though I would need to have this confirmed). Furthermore, the Unichip can remove the boost cut on TT's, with the addition of an auxiliary module. These modules, or x-drivers as we know them, can also be setup to trigger water spray systems for intercoolers or NOS systems. There are other features and functions possible, but this covers the main ones.

If any one has any specific questions, by all means let me know. If you want to e-mail me direct, you can do so at [email protected]

Cheers,
Rainer

Besides the auto, there isn't much else that a MoTeC can't do.

I'm pretty sure you can leave the factory ecu in to do all the special things, but it may cost more.
