ticking ucf20

just bought a 98 ls400 and working my way through it bit by bit...

the only issue I have that I cant work out is a fast ticking noise from the very top rear of the block. It seems constant in volume and tone regardless of revs or engine temp, and almost central.

would appreciate any ideas or areas to investigate, the v8 is completely new to me and i'm nervous about ignoring it without diagnosing the cause.

Never had one with a tick sorry but it pays to know what we are working with first. Try unpluging the intake manifold VSV plug. THe solenoids(VSV) seem to fail a bit and this could be causing a ticking noise. The two pin plug is on a small bracket bolted to the top of the intake manifold on the RH rear.
