The 4L80E/4L85E is a 4 speed auto.
4 = 4 Speeds
L = Longitude
80 = Torque Class
E = Electronic Controls (M = Manual, but very rare only done in 1991 or so)
There is a 6L90E, but I expect it to be very very expensive. Then there is the Allison A1000 5/6 speed, but that is so big it would never fit in much save a big pickup.

Thats sorta what ford did on the A4LD to make the 5R55. They are just engaging od in gears. So the shift pattern is really:

Voila, a close ratio 6 speed....for almost nothing hardwarewise, just a trans controller....
Do that to the a650 and have a 8 speed.....
